The Fire Steed is a flaming horse from the planes of fire. It attacks on sight and breathes fire, and only the most skilled tamers (106 Animal Taming) can ride one. It carries a fortune in sulfurous ash and rubies.

Overview

  • In-game name: a fire steed
  • Corpse: a fire steed corpse

Abilities

Fire breath

The fire steed breathes fire at its target.

  • Chance: 50% each time it gets a chance to act in combat, then it waits 30–45 seconds before it can breathe again.
  • Damage: 5% of its current hit points, at most 200 (a full-health fire steed deals about 11–12). It does less damage as it gets hurt. (100% fire damage; the type doesn't matter under New Bradford's combat rules.)
  • Range: the target has to be within its sight range and in line of sight.
  • It stops for about a second to breathe, so you can see it coming.
  • A peacemade (calmed) or summoned fire steed can't use it.

Taming

Requirement Value
Minimum Animal Taming 106.0 (below this you have no chance)
Control slots 2
Maximum owners 5 (each previous owner makes it harder to tame)
Bonding Yes
Rideable Yes
Favorite food Meat
  • Success chance. You need at least 106.0 Animal Taming even to try, so you'll need skill above 100 (power scrolls). For a first-time tame the chance at the end of an attempt is about 8% at 110.0 skill and about 28% at 120.0 (it would reach 100% only at 155.9, above the skill cap). Every previous owner adds 6 points to the difficulty.
  • Don't hurt it. If it takes any damage during your attempt, taming fails with "The animal is too angry to continue taming."
  • Stay close. You must stay within 6 tiles of it and keep a clear path to it.
  • Obedience. Once tamed, how often it obeys depends on your Animal Taming and Animal Lore (taming counts four times as much as lore). With both at 106.0 it obeys about 70% of the time, and at about 110.9 it reaches the 99% maximum. Below 106.0 the chance drops quickly, to as low as 22%.
  • Re-taming. If you've owned this one before, taming it again always succeeds ("That wasn't even challenging.").
  • After its first tame, its skills drop to 90% of their wild values, or 86% if it was paralyzed while you tamed it. Its stats don't drop.

Pack instinct

It has the Daemon and Equine pack instincts. A pet's melee damage goes up when other pets of the same owner that share a pack instinct (for example nightmares, which have the same two) stand next to the same target and fight it: +25% with one other, +50% with two, +75% with three and +100% with four or more. It only applies against creatures, never against players.

Bonding

Only the owner can bond with a fire steed, and they need at least 106.0 Animal Taming (base skill). Feed it to start bonding, then feed it again after 7 days to finish. When you see "Your pet has bonded with you!", it's done.

Riding

Double-click your tamed fire steed to ride it. It can run 3,840 steps before it gets too tired to move, the same as a horse. Only running counts (walking doesn't tire it unless you're overloaded), and it recovers 1 step per second while it isn't running.

Loot

Every fire steed carries:

  • 151–300 sulfurous ash
  • 16–30 rubies

It has no loot packs, so it carries no gold.

Carving

There's nothing to carve from its corpse.

Location

  • The Deceit brazier: double-clicking it from within 2 tiles summons one creature picked at random from a list of about 90, and this is one of them. The brazier warns players who step next to it ("Heed this warning well, and use this brazier at your own peril"). It works once every 15 minutes and places the creature within 5 tiles. The summoned creature is set to attack the closest target, even if it would normally leave you alone, and it stays within 5 tiles of the brazier.

Tips

  • You need power-scrolled Animal Taming (above 100) to even try.
  • It keeps its fire breath as a pet; the breath does 5% of its current hit points, so a healthy steed breathes harder.
  • Even if you can't tame it, kill it for 16–30 rubies and a mage's supply of sulfurous ash.
  • It eats meat, not hay or fruit, unlike ordinary horses.
