Skills/Meditation

From New Bradford
(Redirected from Meditation)

Meditation is the mage's fuel line. It speeds up how quickly your mana comes back, both all the time and especially when you sit down to meditate. With high Meditation you can cast again and again with hardly a pause.

How mana comes back

You get your mana back one point at a time. How long each point takes depends on your Intelligence plus your Meditation: the higher the total, the faster you regenerate. Meditating halves the time again.

Intelligence Meditation Seconds per mana point While meditating Mana per minute Per minute meditating
25 0 5.82 s 2.91 s 10 21
50 0 4.76 s 2.38 s 13 25
100 0 3.01 s 1.51 s 20 40
50 50 3.01 s 1.51 s 20 40
100 50 1.76 s 0.88 s 34 68
50 100 1.76 s 0.88 s 34 68
100 100 1 s 0.50 s 60 120
120 120 0.75 s 0.50 s 80 120

The fastest anyone can regain mana is one point every half second.

Meditating

Use the skill to try to enter a trance:

  • Your chance is better with higher Meditation and less missing mana. At 100 Meditation you'll always succeed unless you're missing more than 75 mana. A beginner does best meditating when only a little mana is missing.
  • You can try again every 10 seconds.
  • Your hands must be free: a spellbook or runebook is fine, weapons and shields are not.
  • You stop meditating when you move, use or pick up an item, take damage, or do anything that would reveal you from hiding, such as casting a spell or attacking. You also stop when your mana is full.

Armor and meditation

Most armor gets in the way of your mana. Each piece of metal or bone armor (and every shield) slows down each mana point, by an amount based on how much armor it gives. Leather armor and circlets don't slow you at all, and studded leather slows you only half as much.

Full suit of Slows each mana point by With 100 Int and 100 Meditation Meditating
Leather (or cloth, or a circlet) Leather (or cloth, or a circlet) none 1 s 0.50 s
Studded leather Studded leather +2 s 3 s 1.50 s
Ringmail Ringmail +5.50 s 6.50 s 3.25 s
Chainmail Chainmail +7 s 7 s 4 s
Bone Bone +7.50 s 7 s 4.25 s
Plate Plate +10 s 7 s 5.50 s

Shields hurt too, each one on its own:

Shield Slows each mana point by With 100 Int and 100 Meditation Meditating
Buckler Buckler +1.75 s 2.75 s 1.37 s
Wooden shield Wooden shield +2 s 3 s 1.50 s
Bronze shield Bronze shield +2.50 s 3.50 s 1.75 s
Metal shield Metal shield +2.75 s 3.75 s 1.87 s
Wooden kite shield Wooden kite shield +3 s 4 s 2 s
Metal kite shield Metal kite shield +4 s 5 s 2.50 s
Heater shield Heater shield +5.75 s 6.75 s 3.38 s

No matter how much armor you wear, you'll never regenerate slower than one point every 7 seconds.

A whole suit of chainmail, bone or plate wipes out the benefit of Meditation when you're not meditating. Even a little metal (a plate helm, say) costs you about a second and a half per point.

Training Meditation

  • Actively: every time you successfully enter a trance, you have a chance to gain. This only works up to 100.
  • Passively: every mana point that comes back while you're not meditating is a chance to gain. The lower your mana, the better the chance. Passive training goes all the way to your cap.
  • The classic method: cast spells until your mana is low, then meditate it back. You train Magery and Meditation at the same time.
  • Below 10.0 you gain on every attempt, sometimes several tenths at once. Above that, each attempt has a chance to gain 0.1.
  • The harder the attempt is for your skill level, the better your chance to gain. Your chance also drops as you get closer to your Meditation cap and to your total skill cap of 700.
  • If you've set Meditation to go down (the arrow in your skills list), gains elsewhere can lower it to make room under your total cap. Lock skills you want to keep.
  • Reaching 100.0 adds Meditation to the Skills Mastered count on your achievements.
  • Mages, mage guildmasters and holy mages will train you for gold: up to a third of their own skill, at most 42.0, for 1 gold per 0.1 points. Ask them (or use their context menu) to train the skill, then drop the gold on them.

Stats: this skill doesn't raise any stats.

Suggested path

Meditation How to train
0 to about 28 Buy it from a mage trainer.
28 to 60 Cast cheap spells (or any spells you are training) until your mana is nearly empty, then meditate. Try to meditate while only a little mana is missing until your skill rises.
60 to 100 Same thing, but you can meditate from almost empty now. Each success is a gain chance, and so is every point you regain normally.
100 to 120 Needs a power scroll. Only passive regeneration trains it now: keep spending mana and let it come back without meditating.

Power scrolls

Power scroll
Power scroll

Meditation tops out at 100.0 unless you use a Meditation power scroll. There are three kinds: exalted (110), mythical (115) and legendary (120). Double-click one to raise your Meditation cap to that number: "You feel a surge of magic as the scroll enhances your Meditation!"

  • Meditation power scrolls come from champion bosses: Barracoon, Lord Oaks, Mephitis, Neira, Rikktor, Semidar and Silvani. Each champion boss leaves 6 power scrolls in random fighting, magic, bard and animal skills, handed out among the players who helped kill it. Each scroll is a 110 (60%), 115 (35%) or 120 (5%).
  • A scroll only works if it's higher than your current cap. Otherwise: "Your Meditation is too high for this power scroll."
  • Champion power scrolls are cursed: they always drop when you die, even from a blessed container. Use them or bank them quickly.
  • Raising the cap doesn't raise your skill. You still have to train the extra points.

Messages

Message What it means
You enter a meditative trance. Success: you're meditating and your mana returns twice as fast.
You cannot focus your concentration. You failed. Try again in 10 seconds.
You are at peace. Your mana is already full.
The mind is strong, but the body is weak. You're below 10% health and can't meditate. Heal first.
Your hands must be free to cast spells or meditate. Put away your weapon or shield first. A spellbook or runebook is fine.
You are busy doing something else and cannot focus. You've got a target cursor up. Cancel it first.

Tips

  • Meditate before a fight, not during it. Any damage breaks the trance.
  • Dress in leather. A mage in leather armor gets full Meditation benefits and still has some protection.
  • Intelligence counts as much as Meditation. The Cunning and Bless spells speed up your regeneration too.
