New page

Mounts are animals you can tame and ride. On horseback you cover ground twice as fast as on foot, and some mounts carry your gear or even protect you in a fight. This guide covers every mount you can find in New Bradford: what it takes to tame each one, how to ride it, and how to look after it.
The mounts
Horse
The Horse is the classic first mount. It's peaceful, needs only 29.1 Animal Taming, and eats fruits and vegetables or grain and hay. Every horse comes in one of four coat colors, and it keeps that color when you ride it.

<gallery mode="packed" heights="70px">
File:NB_Mounts_Horse_E2.png|Gray
</gallery>

Ridable Llama
The Ridable Llama is a gentle, easy tame at 29.1 Animal Taming. It's the weakest mount in a fight, so it's best for getting around. Be careful: the regular Llama and the Pack Llama look alike but can't be ridden.

Desert and Forest Ostards
The Desert Ostard and Forest Ostard are big running birds that only fight when attacked. Both need 29.1 Animal Taming and are much tougher than a horse, with 71–88 hit points. The forest ostard hits a little harder (8–14 instead of 5–11) and comes in a random shade of green.

Frenzied Ostard
The Frenzied Ostard is an aggressive ostard that attacks on sight. It needs 77.1 Animal Taming, but it's the fastest-moving of the ostards (Dexterity 96–115) and a real fighter, with strong Wrestling and Tactics and 11–17 damage. It eats meat, fish, eggs, or fruits and vegetables.

Ridgeback and Savage Ridgeback
The Ridgeback is a riding lizard that comes in two looks: the regular ridgeback and the darker savage ridgeback. Both have the same stats and need 83.1 Animal Taming. Once tamed, a ridgeback always obeys its owner, and any owner can bond with it no matter their skill. The savage ridgeback has slightly better fire and poison resistance. Anyone can tame and ride either one; there's no restriction on who can ride a savage ridgeback.

Giant Beetle
The Giant Beetle is a mount and a pack animal in one. It's strong (300 Strength, 200 hit points, 100 Wrestling and Tactics), and it eats meat.
* Taming: only 29.1 Animal Taming, but a wild beetle won't let you tame it until it's beaten down to a tenth of its hit points or less. It attacks on sight, so come ready to fight. Beetles that already had an owner don't need to be beaten down.
* Control slots: it takes 3 of your 5 slots.
* Pack: it carries a strong backpack that holds up to 1,600 stones of weight. Drop items on the beetle, or open its pack, to store things. Only you and its friends can get into the pack.
* If it dies, everything in its pack goes onto its corpse, so you can loot your belongings back.
* A wild beetle hit by a harmful spell gets much faster until it loses its target.

Unicorn
The Unicorn is a powerful magical mount that attacks evil creatures and fights with spells. It needs 95.1 Animal Taming and 2 control slots.
* Women only. Only female characters can tame a unicorn or ride it. Anyone else gets "The unicorn refuses to allow you to ride it."
* Cures your poison. If you're poisoned and a hit would leave you below 40 hit points, your unicorn may cure the poison with magic ("Your mount senses you are in danger and aids you with magic."). The weaker the poison and the higher its Magery, the better the chance.
* It's immune to poison.

Ki-Rin
The Ki-Rin is the unicorn's counterpart. It also needs 95.1 Animal Taming and 2 control slots, attacks evil creatures, and casts spells. Its hits do part fire damage.
* Men only. Only male characters can tame a ki-rin or ride it ("The Ki-Rin refuses your attempts to mount it.").
* Calls down lightning. If a hit would leave you below 30 hit points, your ki-rin strikes your attacker with lightning for 35–100 damage that can't be resisted ("Your mount calls down the forces of nature on your opponent."). Your attacker has to be within 18 tiles.

Nightmare
The Nightmare is the strongest mount in New Bradford: 496–525 Strength, 298–315 hit points and 60 armor. It needs 95.1 Animal Taming and 2 control slots. It attacks on sight, breathes fire, casts spells, and its hits do part fire damage. It eats meat. Every nightmare has one of three looks and keeps it when ridden.

Taming a mount
For the full details, see Animal Taming.
* Use Animal Taming on the creature. You need at least the skill shown in the table above, or you have no chance.
* You must have enough free follower slots. Everyone has 5, so you could own a horse, two ostards, and a ridgeback at once, but a giant beetle plus a nightmare would already be 5.
* Don't hurt the animal while taming it (except the giant beetle, which you have to beat down first). Stay within a few tiles and keep a clear path to it.
* Every previous owner makes a creature harder to tame again.

Mounting and dismounting
* To mount: double-click your tamed mount while standing next to it (within 1 tile). Only its owner can ride it. A wild animal won't let you on: "That mount does not look broken! You would have to tame it to ride it."
* To dismount: double-click yourself while riding (open your paperdoll and double-click your character). Your mount appears next to you, still yours.
* You can't mount while you're already riding, while you're polymorphed or transformed, or while you're in a trade window.
* A poisoned mount refuses to be ridden ("This mount is too ill to ride."). Cure it first.
* If your mount is killed while you're on it, you're dropped to the ground.

Riding
Riding makes you much faster:
How you move !! Time per step
Walking on foot || 0.4 seconds
Running on foot || 0.2 seconds
Walking while mounted || 0.2 seconds
Running while mounted || 0.1 seconds (twice as fast as running on foot)
Every mount moves at the same speed while you're riding it. Pick a mount for its toughness, abilities and looks, not for speed.

Caring for your mount
Feeding
Each mount has a favorite food. Drop it on your mount to feed it.
* Fruits and vegetables or grain and hay: horse, ridable llama, desert ostard, forest ostard, ridgeback, savage ridgeback, unicorn, ki-rin
* Meat: giant beetle, nightmare
* Meat, fish, eggs, or fruits and vegetables: frenzied ostard

Bonding
A bonded mount stays with you even after it dies: you can resurrect it instead of losing it. To bond, the owner feeds it its favorite food, then feeds it again after 7 days. When you see "Your pet has bonded with you!", it's done.
* You need Animal Taming at least as high as the mount's taming requirement to start bonding. Mounts that need 29.1 or less have no requirement.
* Ridgebacks and savage ridgebacks can bond with any owner, whatever their skill.

Stabling
Any animal trainer will stable your mount for 30 gold per pet for a week, taken from your backpack or your bank. Say stable near the trainer to drop a pet off, and claim to get your pets back.

How many pets you can stable depends on your Animal Taming, Animal Lore and Veterinary skills added together:
Combined skill !! Stable slots
Below 160 || 2
160 or more || 3
200 or more || 4
240 or more || 5
Each of those three skills at 100 or higher adds one more slot, and each at 110 or higher adds two, plus one more for every further 10 points.

Ethereal mounts
Ethereal mounts are veteran rewards for long-standing accounts. An ethereal mount is a statuette you keep in your backpack. Double-click it to summon it and climb on; it never needs taming, feeding or stabling, and it can't be killed. It still uses 1 of your follower slots while you ride it, and you can't summon it while you're polymorphed, already riding, or have too many followers.

Statuette !! Ethereal mount
