The Balron is the greatest of the common daemons: a winged giant with a longsword, near-master Magery, over 1,000 Strength and up to 711 hit points. It's one of the richest regular monsters to kill.

Overview

  • In-game name: a random daemon name from the balron name list
  • Corpse: a balron corpse
  • Behavior: it attacks the nearest target it sees and fights like a spellcaster (mage AI), mixing spells with melee.
  • Movement: it is one of the faster creatures in the game (fast speed).
  • Rummages corpses: from time to time it takes a random item from a corpse within 2 tiles (*rummages through a corpse and takes an item*). Loot your kills quickly near one.

Magery 95.5–100.0
Evaluating Intelligence 90.1–100.0
Tactics 90.1–100.0
Wrestling 90.1–100.0
Anatomy 25.1–50.0

Abilities

Magic

It fights with the mage AI: it closes to melee range but casts between swings. Its Magery is 95.5–100.0 and its Evaluating Intelligence 90.1–100.0.

  • Damage spells: Magic Arrow, Harm, Fireball, Lightning, Mind Blast, Energy Bolt, Explosion and Flame Strike.
  • Other spells: about 1 cast in 8 is Poison (only if you aren't poisoned already). It may also Bless itself, curse you (Weaken, Clumsy, Feeblemind or Curse), drain your mana (Mana Drain or Mana Vampire) or Paralyze you.
  • Healing: it cures itself when poisoned, and sometimes heals itself (Greater Heal when badly hurt), more often the higher its Magery.
  • Dispel: with 151+ Intelligence it can cast Dispel on your summoned creatures (more reliably the higher its Magery).

Poison immunity

It is immune to poison up to Deadly (Lesser, Regular, Greater, Deadly). Only stronger poison affects it.

Loot

Every balron carries:

  • Gold: about 1,064–1,650 in total (from its "Filthy Rich" ×2 and "Rich" loot)
  • 2 magic scrolls from circles 4–7. With Necromancy enabled on New Bradford, necromancy scrolls can show up too.
  • a longsword

It may also carry:

  • A magic weapon, armor piece or shield (up to 11 chances, from about 33% down to 1% each)
  • A musical instrument (about 5% or less)
  • A level 5 treasure map (1% chance)

Carving

Use a blade on the corpse to get:

  • 1 raw ribs

Location

  • The Deceit brazier: double-clicking it from within 2 tiles summons one creature picked at random from a list of about 90, and this is one of them. The brazier warns players who step next to it ("Heed this warning well, and use this brazier at your own peril"). It works once every 15 minutes and places the creature within 5 tiles. The summoned creature is set to attack the closest target, even if it would normally leave you alone, and it stays within 5 tiles of the brazier.

Tips

  • Its Magery of 95–100 means Flamestrike and Energy Bolt hit hard; have Magic Resistance and a high health pool.
  • It can't be poisoned beyond Deadly, so Lethal is your only poison option.
  • Loot fast: it rummages corpses near it.
