* '''The Deceit brazier''' (a scripted item named for the dungeon Deceit): double-clicking it from within 2 tiles summons one creature picked at random from a list of about 90, and this is one of them. The brazier warns players who step next to it ("Heed this warning well, and use this brazier at your own peril"). It works once every 15 minutes and places the creature within 5 tiles. The Dragon is one of the most powerful creatures you can tame on New Bradford. It attacks on sight, breathes fire, casts spells, and needs 93.9 Animal Taming and 3 control slots. Taming dragons has its own New Bradford achievement.

Overview

  • In-game name: a dragon
  • Corpse: a dragon corpse
  • Looks: every dragon spawns with one of two random looks (body 12 or 59). The look decides the color of scales its corpse gives.
  • Behavior: it attacks the nearest target it sees and fights like a spellcaster (mage AI), using both melee and spells.

Stats

Stat Value
Strength 796–825
Dexterity 86–105
Intelligence 436–475
Hit points 478–495
Stamina 86–105 (same as its Dexterity)
Mana 436–475 (same as its Intelligence)
Melee damage 16–22
Armor rating 60
Fame / Karma 15,000 / −15,000

Skills

Skill Range
Magic Resistance 99.1–100.0
Tactics 97.6–100.0
Wrestling 90.1–92.5
Evaluating Intelligence 30.1–40.0
Magery 30.1–40.0

Abilities

Fire breath

The dragon breathes fire at its target.

  • Chance: 50% each time it gets a chance to act in combat, then it waits 30–45 seconds before it can breathe again.
  • Damage: 5% of the dragon's current hit points (a full-health dragon deals about 23–24). A wounded dragon's breath does less damage.
  • Range: it needs line of sight to you, and it can reach as far as it can see.
  • It stands still for about a second while it breathes.
  • A peacemade (pacified) dragon can't breathe fire.
  • A tamed dragon keeps its fire breath and uses it for you.

Magic

It uses the mage AI with up to 40 Magery and 40 Evaluating Intelligence, so expect low- to mid-level spells along with its melee attacks. Which spells it casts depends on the AI and isn't listed here.

Dispels summons

While it's wild, any summoned creature that can be dispelled is destroyed instantly when it hits the dragon in melee or when the dragon hits it. Blade spirits, energy vortexes and summoned elementals or daemons won't help you here. A tamed dragon loses this ability.

Taming

Requirement Value
Minimum Animal Taming 93.9 (below this you have no chance)
Control slots 3
Maximum owners 5 (each previous owner makes it harder to tame)
Bonding Yes
Rideable No
Favorite food Meat
  • It fights back. The dragon usually gets angry instead of letting you start: on 95% of your taming attempts you'll see "You seem to anger the beast!" and it attacks you. Bring a way to survive or escape. It won't attack if your Honor virtue is active.
  • Success chance. For a first-time tame, your chance of success at the end of an attempt is about 12% at 100.0 skill, and it improves as your skill rises. Every previous owner adds 6 points to the difficulty.
  • Don't hurt it. If it takes any damage during your attempt, taming fails with "The animal is too angry to continue taming."
  • Stay close. You must stay within 6 tiles of it and keep a clear path to it.
  • Obedience. Once tamed, how often it obeys depends on your Animal Taming and Animal Lore (taming counts four times as much as lore). With both at 93.9 it obeys about 70% of the time, and at about 98.8 it reaches the 99% maximum. Below 93.9 the chance drops quickly, to as low as 22%.
  • Re-taming. If you've owned this one before, taming it again always succeeds ("That wasn't even challenging.").
  • After its first tame, its skills drop to 90% of their wild values, or 86% if it was paralyzed while you tamed it. Its stats don't drop.

Bonding

Only the owner can bond with a dragon, and they need at least 93.9 Animal Taming (base skill). Feed it to start bonding, then feed it again after 7 days to finish. When you see "Your pet has bonded with you!", it's done.

New Bradford achievement

Every dragon you tame counts toward the Tame 100 Dragons goal in your Achievements. Only your first tame of each dragon counts. Re-taming one you've owned before doesn't.

Loot

Every dragon carries:

  • Gold: about 804–1,300 in total (from its "Filthy Rich" ×2 loot)
  • 8 random gems (amber, amethyst, citrine, diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire, star sapphire or tourmaline)

It may also carry:

  • A magic weapon, armor, shield or jewelry (up to 8 chances, from about 33% down to 5% each)
  • A musical instrument (about 4% or less)
  • A level 4 treasure map (1% chance)

Carving

Use a blade on the corpse to get:

  • 19 raw ribs
  • 20 barbed hides
  • 7 scales: yellow scales from the yellow-bodied look, red scales from the red one

Location

  • The Deceit brazier: double-clicking it from within 2 tiles summons one creature picked at random from a list of about 90, and this is one of them. The brazier warns players who step next to it ("Heed this warning well, and use this brazier at your own peril"). It works once every 15 minutes and places the creature within 5 tiles. The summoned creature is set to attack the closest target, even if it would normally leave you alone, and it stays within 5 tiles of the brazier.

Tips

  • Be ready to fight before you start: it angers on 95% of attempts and attacks you.
  • At 100.0 skill each attempt has only about a 12% chance.
  • Don't bring summons: a wild dragon destroys any summoned creature that touches it in melee.
  • Its fire breath is strongest at full health (about 23–24 damage).
  • Taming 100 of them earns the Tame 100 Dragons achievement.
  • Carve the corpse for 19 raw ribs, 20 barbed hides and 7 scales.
  • Keep it away from savages and Chaos Dragoons. Savages, savage riders, savage shamans, Chaos Dragoons and Chaos Dragoon Elites deal triple melee damage to a dragon, so a tamed one can die fast against them.
