The Dread Spider is a giant spellcasting spider. It mixes strong magic with a bite that carries the deadliest poison in the game, and it's immune to poison itself.

Overview

  • In-game name: a dread spider
  • Corpse: a dread spider corpse
  • Behavior: it attacks the nearest target it sees and fights like a spellcaster (mage AI), mixing spells with melee.
  • Movement: it is one of the faster creatures in the game (fast speed).

Abilities

Magic

It fights with the mage AI: it closes to melee range but casts between swings. Its Magery is 65.1–80.0 and its Evaluating Intelligence 65.1–80.0.

  • Damage spells: Magic Arrow, Harm, Fireball, Lightning and Mind Blast. A stronger one (with more Magery) can also cast Energy Bolt, Explosion and Flame Strike.
  • Other spells: about 1 cast in 8 is Poison (only if you aren't poisoned already). It may also Bless itself, curse you (Weaken, Clumsy, Feeblemind or Curse), drain your mana (Mana Drain or Mana Vampire) or Paralyze you.
  • Healing: it cures itself when poisoned, and sometimes heals itself (Greater Heal when badly hurt), more often the higher its Magery.
  • Dispel: with 286+ Intelligence it can cast Dispel on your summoned creatures (more reliably the higher its Magery).

Poison attack

Each time its melee attack hits, there's a 50% chance it also poisons the target with Lethal poison.

  • Lethal poison deals 25% of your current hit points (at least 9, at most 26) every 5 seconds, for up to 10 ticks.
  • Cure it with a cure potion, the Cure or Arch Cure spell, or a healer's bandages and the Healing skill. Higher levels are harder to cure.

Poison immunity: it is immune to all poison, so poisoned weapons, the Poison spell and poison potions do nothing to it.

Loot

Every dread spider carries:

  • Gold: about 402–650 in total (from its "Filthy Rich" loot)
  • 8 spider's silk

It may also carry:

  • A magic weapon, armor piece or shield (up to 4 chances, from about 33% down to 5% each)
  • A musical instrument (about 2% or less)
  • A level 3 treasure map (1% chance)

Carving

There's nothing to carve from its corpse.

Location

  • Champion spawn: it is a level 3 creature of the Arachnid champion spawn (champion: Mephitis), so it appears at the fixed Arachnid altar at 5190, 1607, and any of the 11 Lost Lands altars that rolls Arachnid. Each one killed during a spawn gives the killer Valor and champion-title progress.
  • The Deceit brazier: double-clicking it from within 2 tiles summons one creature picked at random from a list of about 90, and this is one of them. The brazier warns players who step next to it ("Heed this warning well, and use this brazier at your own peril"). It works once every 15 minutes and places the creature within 5 tiles. The summoned creature is set to attack the closest target, even if it would normally leave you alone, and it stays within 5 tiles of the brazier.

Tips

  • Bring cure potions or a healer: its bite can apply Lethal poison, which takes a quarter of your current hit points every 5 seconds.
  • Poison spells and poisoned weapons are useless against it.
  • With up to 80 Magery it casts as high as Mind Blast or Energy Bolt; a magic-resistant fighter or a strong pet handles it best.
  • Its "Filthy Rich" loot (about 400–650 gold) and level 3 treasure maps make it a good hunt for an experienced character.
