The Water Elemental is a living wave that casts spells and can move through water as well as on land.

Overview

  • In-game name: a water elemental
  • Corpse: a water elemental corpse
  • Behavior: it attacks the nearest target it sees and fights like a spellcaster (mage AI), mixing spells with melee.
  • Swimmer: it can move through water as well as on land.
  • Bleed immune: bleed attacks (a weapon special New Bradford enables) don't affect it.

Evaluating Intelligence 60.1–75.0
Magery 60.1–75.0
Tactics 50.1–70.0
Wrestling 50.1–70.0

Abilities

Magic

It fights with the mage AI: it closes to melee range but casts between swings. Its Magery is 60.1–75.0 and its Evaluating Intelligence 60.1–75.0.

  • Damage spells: Magic Arrow, Harm, Fireball, Lightning and Mind Blast. A stronger one (with more Magery) can also cast Energy Bolt and Explosion.
  • Other spells: about 1 cast in 8 is Poison (only if you aren't poisoned already). It may also Bless itself, curse you (Weaken, Clumsy, Feeblemind or Curse), drain your mana (Mana Drain) or Paralyze you.
  • Healing: it cures itself when poisoned, and sometimes heals itself (Greater Heal when badly hurt), more often the higher its Magery.
  • Dispel: with 101+ Intelligence it can cast Dispel on your summoned creatures (more reliably the higher its Magery).

Loot

Every water elemental carries:

  • Gold: about 90–225 in total (from its "Average" and "Meager" loot)
  • 1 random potion: Agility, Strength, Refresh, Lesser Cure, Lesser Heal or Lesser Poison
  • 3 black pearls

It may also carry:

  • A magic weapon, armor piece or shield (up to 5 chances, from about 5% down to 0.2% each)
  • A musical instrument (about 0.5% or less)
  • A level 2 treasure map (1% chance)

Carving

There's nothing to carve from its corpse.

Location

  • The Deceit brazier: double-clicking it from within 2 tiles summons one creature picked at random from a list of about 90, and this is one of them. The brazier warns players who step next to it ("Heed this warning well, and use this brazier at your own peril"). It works once every 15 minutes and places the creature within 5 tiles. The summoned creature is set to attack the closest target, even if it would normally leave you alone, and it stays within 5 tiles of the brazier.
  • Special fishing nets: casting a special or fabled fishing net in deep water raises sea monsters, and each one has a 1 in 4 chance to be this creature. See Sea Serpent for how the nets work.

Tips

  • It can follow you into water, so a lake won't save you.
  • Kill it for 3 black pearls and some potions.
