Mining Gloves (gloves of mining) are blacksmith gloves that raise your Mining skill while you wear them. There are three kinds, leather, studded leather and ringmail, and the heavier the gloves, the bigger the bonus. All three are rewards for turning in blacksmith bulk orders.
The three pairs
| Gloves | Name | Mining bonus | Armor rating | Durability | Strength required | Weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leather blacksmith gloves of mining | +1 | 13 | 30 to 40 | 10 | 1 stone | Leather. You can meditate in them. | |
| Studded leather blacksmith gloves of mining | +3 | 16 | 35 to 45 | 25 | 2 stones | Studded leather. | |
| Ringmail blacksmith gloves of mining | +5 | 22 | 40 to 50 | 20 | 1 stone | Ringmail. −1 Dexterity while worn. |
Each pair is tinted a random colored-metal shade, anywhere from dull copper to valorite, so yours may not match the picture. The color is only for looks. It doesn't change the bonus or the armor.
How the bonus works
- The bonus is added to your Mining skill the moment you put the gloves on, and removed when you take them off. Hover over the gloves to see it: mining bonus +5.
- It improves your chance to dig and to smelt.
- It doesn't count toward a metal's "Mining to dig" requirement. That only looks at the skill you've trained yourself. If the gloves lift you over a metal's requirement while your trained skill is still below it, digs for that metal fail instead of giving you iron. Take the gloves off on spots you can't mine yet. See Mining for the requirements.
- The stone and sand books also need 100.0 trained Mining, so the gloves won't get you there early. Once you can dig sand, +5 gloves raise your chance a little.
How to get them
All three pairs come only from blacksmith bulk orders. Blacksmiths and weaponsmiths hand out bulk orders to anyone with some Blacksmithy skill. Fill one and hand it back, and you get gold, fame and a reward item. The reward depends on how many points the order is worth:
| Order worth | Reward roll |
|---|---|
| 50 to 199 points | 45% sturdy shovel, 45% sturdy pickaxe, 10% leather gloves of mining |
| 200 to 399 points | 45% gargoyle's pickaxe, 45% prospector's tool, 10% studded leather gloves of mining |
| 450 to 499 points | 90% powder of temperament, 10% ringmail gloves of mining |
Points add up like this:
- Order size: 10 items is worth 10 points, 15 items 25, and 20 items 50.
- Exceptional quality required: +200.
- Colored metal required: +200 for dull copper, plus 50 for each step up (shadow iron 250, copper 300 … valorite 550).
- Large orders add points for the type of armor or weapon.
So a plain 20-item order (50 points) can give the leather pair, an exceptional 20-item order (250 points) can give the studded pair, and a 20-item order that needs exceptional dull copper (450 points) can give the ringmail pair. Orders worth 400 to 449 points, or 500 and up, don't give gloves.
Tips
- Go for ringmail. +5 is the biggest bonus and the gloves only weigh 1 stone. The −1 Dexterity barely matters for a miner.
- Keep a pair in your pack and slip them on when you're working a spot you can already mine.
- The gloves are real armor, so they also protect your hands while you're out in the mountains.
