The Bog Thing is a huge walking mass of swamp plants with 481–540 hit points. It grows boglings when hit, and when it's badly hurt it eats them to heal.

Overview

  • In-game name: a bog thing
  • Corpse: a plant corpse
  • Behavior: it attacks the nearest target it sees and fights in melee.
  • Movement: it is one of the slower creatures in the game (slow speed), so you can outrun it.
  • Bard skills: it can't be provoked, calmed with Peacemaking or discorded.
  • No mana: it has no mana.

Abilities

Poison immunity

It is immune to all poison, so poisoned weapons, the Poison spell and poison potions do nothing to it.

Special behaviors

  • Grows and eats boglings. Each time it's hit in melee there's a 25% chance it does something:
    • while it has more than a quarter of its hit points, it grows a bogling at a random spot nearby, which attacks whoever hit it;
    • once it's at a quarter or less, it instead eats every bogling within 2 tiles (unless it's already at full health), healing by half of each bogling's current hit points.

Loot

Every bog thing carries:

  • Gold: about 120–300 in total (from its "Average" ×2 loot)
  • 10 logs (or, 25% of the time, 10 boards instead)
  • 3 reagents (random)
  • 2 seeds

It may also carry:

  • A magic weapon, armor piece or shield (up to 6 chances, from about 5% down to 0.5% each)
  • A musical instrument (about 0.8% or less)

Carving

There's nothing to carve from its corpse.

Tips

  • Kill the boglings as they appear, especially once it's below a quarter of its health, or it will eat them to heal.
  • Spells and archery don't make it grow boglings; only melee hits do.
  • Bard skills don't work on it, and it's immune to all poison.
