Begging lets you plead with townsfolk for spare coins. It won't make you rich, but it's a skill any character can use, and a well-known beggar can squeeze a little more out of each mark.
At a glance
| Skill cap | 100 (Grandmaster) |
|---|---|
| Use | Use the skill, then target a human NPC |
| Reward | |
| Stats it trains | None |
How to beg
- Use the skill: To whom do you wish to grovel?
- Target a human townsperson. You can't beg from players (Perhaps just asking would work better.), animals or monsters (There is little chance of getting money from that!).
- Stand within 2 tiles and dismount first; mounted beggars get nothing (They seem unwilling to give you any money.).
- Your character bows, and two seconds later you get an answer.
The answer
| They say | What happened |
|---|---|
| I feel sorry for thee... | Success. They hand over some gold: a tenth of what they carry, up to 10 coins plus 1 for every 2,500 fame (at most 14). |
| Thou dost not look trustworthy... no gold for thee today! | Your karma is negative and they don't trust you. The worse your karma, the more often this happens. |
| I have not enough money to give thee any! | Your check failed, or they have no gold to spare. |
Begging costs karma. Each success lowers your karma by up to 40, but it never pushes it below −3,000. After each attempt you must wait about 10 seconds to use a skill again.
Training Begging
- Every attempt that reaches the skill check is a chance to gain, from 0 to 100.
- No one teaches Begging, so you have to start from scratch.
- With negative karma many attempts are refused before the check, so train while your karma is positive.
- Below 10.0 you gain on every attempt, sometimes several tenths at once. Above that, each attempt has a chance to gain 0.1.
- The harder the attempt is for your skill level, the better your chance to gain. Your chance also drops as you get closer to your Begging cap and to your total skill cap of 700.
- If you've set Begging to go down (the arrow in your skills list), gains elsewhere can lower it to make room under your total cap. Lock skills you want to keep.
- Reaching 100.0 adds Begging to the Skills Mastered count on your achievements.
Stats: this skill doesn't raise any stats.
Suggested path
| Begging | How to train |
|---|---|
| 0 to 100 | Beg from townsfolk at a bank or market. Move on to new faces as their purses empty. |
Tips
- Rich towns pay best. Shopkeepers with full purses give the full amount.
- Combine it with Tracking or Forensics to play a street urchin who sees everything.
