The Gargoyle is a winged stone-skinned creature that mixes claws with spells (70–85 Magery). It's a common dungeon foe for mid-level characters.

Overview

  • In-game name: a gargoyle
  • Corpse: a gargoyle corpse
  • Behavior: it attacks the nearest target it sees and fights like a spellcaster (mage AI), mixing spells with melee.

Abilities

Magic

It fights with the mage AI: it closes to melee range but casts between swings. Its Magery is 70.1–85.0 and its Evaluating Intelligence 70.1–85.0.

  • Damage spells: Magic Arrow, Harm, Fireball, Lightning, Mind Blast, Energy Bolt and Explosion. A stronger one (with more Magery) can also cast Flame Strike.
  • Other spells: about 1 cast in 8 is Poison (only if you aren't poisoned already). It may also Bless itself, curse you (Weaken, Clumsy, Feeblemind or Curse), drain your mana (Mana Drain or Mana Vampire) or Paralyze you.
  • Healing: it cures itself when poisoned, and sometimes heals itself (Greater Heal when badly hurt), more often the higher its Magery.
  • Dispel: with up to 105 Intelligence it can cast Dispel on your summoned creatures (more reliably the higher its Magery).

Loot

Every gargoyle carries:

  • Gold: about 60–150 in total (from its "Average" loot)
  • 1 magic scroll from circles 4–7. With Necromancy enabled on New Bradford, necromancy scrolls can show up too.
  • 1–4 random gems (amber, amethyst, citrine, diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire, star sapphire or tourmaline)

It may also carry:

  • A magic weapon, armor piece or shield (up to 3 chances, from about 5% down to 0.5% each)
  • A musical instrument (about 0.4% or less)
  • A gargoyle's pickaxe (2.5%). Mining with one has a 10% chance to call up an ore elemental when you dig coloured ore; see Dull Copper Elemental.
  • A level 1 treasure map (1% chance)

Carving

Use a blade on the corpse to get:

  • 1 raw ribs

Location

  • Champion spawn: it is a level 2 creature of the Abyss champion spawn (champion: Semidar), so it appears at the fixed Abyss altar at 5815, 1352, and any of the 11 Lost Lands altars that rolls Abyss. Each one killed during a spawn gives the killer Valor and champion-title progress.
  • The Deceit brazier: double-clicking it from within 2 tiles summons one creature picked at random from a list of about 90, and this is one of them. The brazier warns players who step next to it ("Heed this warning well, and use this brazier at your own peril"). It works once every 15 minutes and places the creature within 5 tiles. The summoned creature is set to attack the closest target, even if it would normally leave you alone, and it stays within 5 tiles of the brazier.

Tips

  • It mixes 70–85 Magery with 7–14 damage claws, so it's dangerous at any range.
  • Its gems (1–4) and circle 4–7 scroll make it decent loot.
  • Carve it for 1 raw ribs.
