Blacksmithy is the craft of hammering metal ingots into armor, shields and weapons. Every suit of plate, every kite shield and every halberd a player makes in New Bradford comes off a smith's anvil. Skilled smiths can work the rare colored metals that miners dig up, mend battered gear, fill bulk orders for the town blacksmiths, and earn runic hammers and power scrolls along the way.
This page explains how blacksmithing works in New Bradford, from your first dagger to a Grandmaster's suit of valorite plate. The metal itself comes from Mining.
At a glance
| Skill category | Crafting & gathering |
|---|---|
| Tools | Smith's hammer, tongs or sledge hammer (see Tools) |
| Workstation | An anvil and a forge, both within 2 tiles of you |
| Materials | Iron and colored metal ingots. Dragon scales for dragon armor. |
| What you can make | Ringmail, chainmail and platemail armor, helmets, shields, swords, axes, polearms, maces and dragon scale armor |
| Other uses | Repairing metal armor and weapons, melting items back into ingots, filling bulk orders |
| Skill cap | 100 (Grandmaster), raised up to 120 with Blacksmithy power scrolls |
| Starting gear | Choosing Blacksmithy as a starting skill gives you tongs, two pickaxes, 50 iron ingots and a half apron. |
Tools
| Tool | Name | Uses | Where to get it | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smith's hammer | 25 to 75 (100 if exceptional) | Blacksmiths (21 gold). Tinkers can make one from 4 iron ingots (40 Tinkering). | Weighs 8 stones. You can hold it in your hand. | |
| Tongs | 25 to 75 (100 if exceptional) | Blacksmiths (13 gold). Tinkers can make them from 1 iron ingot (35 Tinkering). | Weighs only 2 stones. | |
| Sledge hammer | 25 to 75 (100 if exceptional) | Tinkers can make one from 4 iron ingots (40 Tinkering). | You can hold it in your hand. | |
| Runic hammer | 50 | Bulk order reward | Makes magic weapons. See Runic hammers. | |
| Ancient smithy hammer | 600 | Bulk order reward | Adds +10, +15, +30 or +60 to your Blacksmithy while you hold it. See below. |
All three ordinary tools work exactly the same, so pick whichever is cheapest or lightest. Keep the tool in your backpack, or hold it in your hand. If you're holding a tool, you have to use that one: "If you have a tool equipped, you must use that tool."
Every attempt uses one charge, whether it succeeds or fails. When the last one is gone the tool breaks: "You have worn out your tool!" Carry spares.
Anvil and forge
| Anvil | Forge |
You can only smith within 2 tiles of both an anvil and a forge. They have to be on roughly the same level as you and in plain sight, so an anvil on the floor above won't count. Otherwise you'll see "You must be near an anvil and a forge to smith items."
Town blacksmith shops have both. A colored anvil from bulk orders works just like a normal one.
How to smith
- Stand within 2 tiles of an anvil and a forge with ingots in your backpack.
- Double-click your smith's hammer, tongs or sledge hammer. The blacksmithy menu opens.
- Pick the metal to use from the Select Metal list. It shows how many ingots of each metal you're carrying.
- Pick a category (Ringmail, Chainmail, Platemail, Helmets, Shields, Bladed, Axes, Polearms, Bashing or Dragon Scale Armor), then the item.
- On success the item goes in your backpack: "You create the item."
The menu also has a Make Last button to repeat your last item, a Last Ten list, Repair Item, Smelt Item, and the maker's mark setting.
Success chance
Every item has a minimum Blacksmithy (listed in the tables below). Below it, you can't make the item at all.
At the minimum your chance is 0%, and it rises by 2% for every skill point above it. At 50 points above the minimum you never fail. For example, a platemail tunic needs 75.0, so you have a 50% chance at 100.0 and you'd never fail at 125.0.
A failed attempt costs all the ingots for that item: "You failed to create the item, and some of your materials are lost." Practice on cheap items, and save rare metal for items you rarely fail.
Exceptional quality
Every successful attempt also has a chance to come out exceptional: "You create an exceptional quality item."
Your exceptional chance is your success chance minus 60% (before it's capped at 100%). Above 95.0 Blacksmithy the penalty shrinks by 3% per point, down to minus 45% at 100.0. So:
- An item you can just about make will never be exceptional.
- At 100.0 Blacksmithy, an item you'd always make at 72.5 or lower is exceptional every time.
- At 100.0, a platemail tunic (75.0) succeeds half the time but is exceptional only 5% of the time.
- Raising your skill past 100 with an ancient smithy hammer or power scrolls raises both chances.
The tables below show each item's exceptional chance at 100.0.
What exceptional means:
- Armor and shields: +8 armor rating and 20% more durability.
- Weapons: 20% more damage and 20% more durability.
Maker's mark
Your work can carry your name. Use the MARK ITEM button in the menu to switch between Mark Item, Do Not Mark and Prompt For Mark. Marked items show crafted by and your name, or crafted with exceptional quality by and your name for exceptional pieces.
Choosing a metal
Blacksmithy is the skill that decides which metals you can work. Below the listed skill, you'll see "You cannot work this strange and unusual metal."
| Ingot | Armor color | Metal | Blacksmithy to work | Mining to smelt items back | Armor bonus |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iron | Any | Any | — | ||
| Dull Copper | 65 | 65 | +2 | ||
| Shadow Iron | 70 | 70 | +4 | ||
| Copper | 75 | 75 | +6 | ||
| Bronze | 80 | 80 | +8 | ||
| Gold | 85 | 85 | +10 | ||
| Agapite | 90 | 90 | +12 | ||
| Verite | 95 | 95 | +14 | ||
| Valorite | 99 | 99 | +16 |
- Armor and shields made from colored ingots take on the metal's color and get the armor bonus shown, up to +16 for valorite.
- Weapons don't take anything from the metal. A weapon made from colored ingots comes out as a plain weapon, so don't waste colored ingots on weapons. The one exception is a runic hammer of the same metal.
- Want your armor plain? On the Select Metal page, toggle DO NOT COLOR (USE MATERIAL COLOR switches it back). You keep the armor bonus.
- Armor rating drops as a piece wears out. A piece with no durability left gives only half its rating, so keep your armor repaired.
The "Mining to smelt items back" column is covered in Melting items down.

Dragon scale armor
| Red | Yellow | Black | Green | White | Blue |
Dragon scale armor is made from scales instead of ingots. Choose the scale color on the menu's material list. Any color can be used at any skill, and the armor takes the color of its scales. Each piece has a base armor rating of 40.
| Item | Blacksmithy needed | Always succeeds at | Exceptional chance at 100 | Scales | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon gloves | 68.9 | 118.9 | 17% | 16 | |
| Dragon helm | 72.6 | 122.6 | 10% | 20 | |

| Dragon leggings | 78.8 | 128.8 | 0% | 28 | |
| Dragon breastplate | 85.0 | 135.0 | 0% | 36 |
Scales come from carving the corpses of these creatures:
| Creature | Scales | Color |
|---|---|---|
| Drake | 2 | Red or yellow |
| Swamp dragon | 5 | Green |
| Serpentine dragon | 6 | Black or white |
| Dragon | 7 | Red or yellow |
| Sea serpent | 8 | Blue |
| Deep sea serpent | 8 | Blue |
| White wyrm | 9 | White |
| Shadow wyrm | 10 | Black |
| Ancient wyrm | 12 | Red, yellow, black or green |
Repairing
Blacksmiths can repair metal armor, shields and weapons, the kinds of things a smith can make.
- Stand near an anvil and a forge with the damaged item in your backpack.
- Open the blacksmithy menu and choose REPAIR ITEM, then target the item.
Two things happen on each attempt:
- The item may lose maximum durability first. The chance is 40%, plus 1% for each point of durability the item is missing, minus 1% for every 10 points of Blacksmithy. It loses 1 point at 90.0 skill or more, 2 points at 70.0 or more, or 3 points below that.
- Then the repair is rolled. The more worn the item, the harder it is. An item at half durability is easy for a Grandmaster. A nearly broken item is a 50/50 roll even at 100.0. On success the item goes back to full durability: "You repair the item."
Because the weaken chance grows with damage, repairing little and often wears your gear out far more slowly than waiting until it's nearly broken.
- Weapons coated in poison can't be repaired until the poison is gone.
- When an item's maximum durability gets too low you'll see "That item has been repaired many times, and will break if repairs are attempted again." and the repair is refused.
- With 50.0 Blacksmithy or more, choose REPAIR ITEM and target a blank scroll to write a repair service contract at your skill level. If a repair from the contract fails, the contract is destroyed.
Melting items down
Choose SMELT ITEM from the menu and target a metal item in your backpack to melt it back into ingots, near an anvil and forge: "You melt the item down into ingots."
- Items made by players give back half the ingots they took to make.
- Store-bought or looted items only give back 1 ingot: "This item is of imported material, probably bought at a store, and does not yield much metal."
- Items that took fewer than 2 ingots to make can't be melted down.
- Colored armor needs Mining at the metal's level to melt down (65 for dull copper up to 99 for valorite). Otherwise: "You have no idea how to work this metal."
- Weapons always melt down into iron, since they don't keep the metal they were made from.
- Dragon scale armor can't be melted down.
This is a cheap way to train: melt your practice pieces back down and use the ingots again.
Bulk orders

Town blacksmiths hand out bulk orders: deeds asking for a batch of a particular item, which you fill and hand back for gold, fame and a reward.
Getting an order
- You need at least some Blacksmithy (anything above 0).
- Every time you sell something to a blacksmith, there's a 20% chance they offer you an order. Read it and accept or decline.
- After you get an order, there's a wait before the next one: 1 hour, or 2 hours from 50.1 Blacksmithy, or 6 hours from 70.1.
- Single-click a blacksmith and choose Bulk Order Info to check the wait. You'll see "You can get an order now." or "An offer may be available in about X hours."
- Bulk order deeds are blessed, so you keep them if you die.
Small orders
A small order asks for 10, 15 or 20 of a single item. Higher skill makes the bigger amounts more likely.
- Half of all small orders are for armor or shields, and half for weapons.
- You're only offered items you can already make. If the order needs exceptional pieces, it's always for an item you have some chance of making exceptional.
- From 70.1 Blacksmithy:
- Orders can ask for exceptional pieces. The chance is (your skill + 80) / 200, about 75% at 70.1 and 90% at 100.
- Armor orders can ask for a colored metal, but only one you can work. Dull copper is the most common and valorite the rarest, and valorite orders need 100.0.
- Below 70.1, orders are always for plain iron, normal-quality pieces.
Large orders
From 70.1 Blacksmithy, some offers are large orders instead. The chance is (your skill − 40) / 300, about 10% at 70.1 and 20% at 100. A large order asks for a whole set, and you fill it by combining filled small orders for each piece (same amount, same quality, same metal).
| Large order | Pieces |
|---|---|
| Ringmail | Gloves, tunic, sleeves, leggings |
| Chainmail | Coif, leggings, tunic |
| Platemail | Arms, legs, helm, gorget, gloves, tunic |
| Axes | Axe, battle axe, double axe, executioner's axe, large battle axe, two-handed axe |
| Fencing | Dagger, short spear, spear, war fork, kryss |
| Maces | War axe, hammer pick, mace, maul, war hammer, war mace |
| Polearms | Bardiche, halberd |
| Swords | Broadsword, cutlass, katana, longsword, scimitar, viking sword |
Filling and turning in
- Double-click the deed (it must be in your backpack) and choose Combine this deed with the item requested.
- Target each finished item. It's used up and the count goes up. Keep targeting until the order is full.
- For a large order, combine it with each matching filled small order instead.
- Drag the filled deed onto a blacksmith: "Thank you so much! Here is a reward for your effort."
Messages you may see while filling: "The item must be exceptional.", "The item is not made from the requested ore.", "The item is not in the request.", and when handing in an unfinished order, "You have not completed the order yet."
Bulk order points
Your reward depends on how many points the order is worth. Add up:
| Part of the order | Points |
|---|---|
| Amount: 10 / 15 / 20 | 10 / 25 / 50 |
| Exceptional | +200 |
| Large order: ringmail | +200 |
| Large order: polearms | +200 |
| Large order: chainmail or fencing | +300 |
| Large order: axes, swords or maces | +350 |
| Large order: platemail | +400 |
| Metal: dull copper / shadow iron / copper / bronze | +200 / +250 / +300 / +350 |
| Metal: gold / agapite / verite / valorite | +400 / +450 / +500 / +550 |
For example, a large exceptional valorite platemail order of 20 is worth 50 + 200 + 400 + 550 = 1,200 points, the top reward.
Bulk order rewards
You get one reward from the highest tier your points reach. Where a tier lists several, you get one of them at random, with the odds shown. Every order also pays gold and fame.
| Points | Reward | |
|---|---|---|
| 0+ | Sturdy shovel | |
| 25+ | Sturdy pickaxe | |
| 50+ | Sturdy shovel (45%), sturdy pickaxe (45%), or +1 gloves of mining (10%) | |

| 1,200+ | Valorite runic hammer |
The mining rewards (sturdy tools, gargoyle's pickaxe, prospector's tool and gloves of mining) are explained on the Mining page.
Runic hammers
A runic hammer is a smith's hammer bound to one metal. It's a bulk order reward with 50 uses, and it's how smiths make magic weapons.
How it works: make a weapon with the runic hammer using ingots of the hammer's own metal. The weapon comes out in that metal's color with the magic properties below. With any other metal, or for armor and shields, the runic hammer works like an ordinary hammer and still uses up a charge.
| Hammer | Ingot | Runic hammer | Durability | Damage | Accuracy | First offered at |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dull Copper runic hammer | Durable | — | Accurate | 500 points | ||
| Shadow Iron runic hammer | Durable | Ruin | — | 550 points | ||
| Copper runic hammer | Fortified | Ruin | Surpassingly accurate | 650 points | ||
| Bronze runic hammer | Fortified | Might | Surpassingly accurate | 700 points | ||
| Gold runic hammer | Indestructible | Force | Eminently accurate | 950 points | ||
| Agapite runic hammer | Indestructible | Power | Eminently accurate | 1,050 points | ||
| Verite runic hammer | Indestructible | Power | Exceedingly accurate | 1,150 points | ||
| Valorite runic hammer | Indestructible | Vanquishing | Supremely accurate | 1,200 points |
What the properties do:
- Damage: Ruin +1, Might +3, Force +5, Power +7, Vanquishing +9.
- Accuracy: adds to your weapon skill while you wield it. Accurate +5, Surpassingly +10, Eminently +15, Exceedingly +20, Supremely +25.
- Durability: Durable +20%, Fortified +100%, Indestructible +120%.
The properties are fixed for each metal, so every valorite runic weapon is a durable, vanquishing, supremely accurate weapon. Runic weapons can still come out exceptional too.
Other bulk order rewards
Ancient smithy hammer

Hold an ancient smithy hammer and it adds +10, +15, +30 or +60 to your Blacksmithy. It's also a working smithing tool with 600 uses. Because both your success and exceptional chances use your boosted skill, it's the best way to turn out exceptional plate and dragon armor. It doesn't change the skill you've trained, so it won't help with bulk order offers or a metal's working requirement.
Colored anvil

An anvil tinted a random colored-metal shade, so yours may not match the picture. Place it in your home and it works exactly like a normal anvil.
Powder of fortifying

Comes with 10 uses. Double-click it and target armor, a shield or a weapon in your backpack to restore the maximum durability lost to repairs back to the item's original maximum. Messages: "You successfully use the powder on the item.", "The item cannot be improved any further." and "You cannot use the powder on that item."
Training Blacksmithy
- Every attempt to make an item can raise your Blacksmithy, whether it succeeds or fails, but only while the item is a challenge. Once you're 50 points above an item's minimum it's too easy to teach you anything, and below the minimum you can't try it at all.
- Below 10.0 you gain on every attempt. Above that, each attempt has a chance to gain 0.1.
- The harder the item is for you, the better your chance to gain, especially when you succeed. Your chance also drops as you get closer to your Blacksmithy cap and to your total skill cap.
- Repairing can also raise your skill.
- Reaching 100.0 adds Blacksmithy to the Skills Mastered count on your achievements.
- Town blacksmiths and the blacksmith guildmaster will also teach you the basics for a fee.
Suggested path
These suggestions are based on each item's skill range and how few ingots it takes. Melt your practice pieces down to get half the ingots back.
| Blacksmithy | Make | Ingots each |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | 3 | |
| 30 to 50 | 6 | |
| 50 to 65 | 8 | |
| 65 to 80 | 6 | |
| 80 to 100 | 10 / 12 |
Bulk orders are worth taking all the way up. Small orders only ask for things you can already make, and filling them is good practice too.
Power scrolls

Blacksmithy tops out at 100.0 unless you use Blacksmithy power scrolls. They come in four kinds: wondrous (105), exalted (110), mythical (115) and legendary (120). Double-click one to raise your Blacksmithy cap to that number: "You feel a surge of magic as the scroll enhances your blacksmithing!"
- Blacksmithy power scrolls come only from blacksmith bulk orders (625, 675, 800 and 900 points). The power scrolls from champion spawns are never Blacksmithy.
- A scroll only works if it's higher than your current cap. Otherwise: "Your blacksmithing is too high for this power scroll."
- Blacksmithy power scrolls are not blessed, so keep them safe.

Tips
- Never make weapons from colored ingots unless you're using a runic hammer of the same metal. The weapon comes out plain.
- Carry spare tools. Every attempt, success or failure, uses a charge. Tongs weigh 2 stones and work just like a hammer.
- Practice on cheap items. A failure costs every ingot for that item, so daggers and maces are much kinder to your wallet than plate.
- Melt down your practice pieces to get half the ingots back.
- Sell to blacksmiths to fish for bulk orders, and check Bulk Order Info to see how long you have to wait.
- Save small orders that match (same item set, amount, quality and metal) to fill a large order. Large orders are worth far more points.
- Repair early. The more worn an item is, the more likely a repair is to shave off maximum durability.
- Work with a miner. Colored ingots come from Mining, and many bulk order rewards are mining tools.
