Camping is the art of making camp in the wild. Light a campfire with kindling, wait for the camp to become secure, and you can log out on the spot with a bedroll instead of waiting.

At a glance

Skill cap 100 (Grandmaster)
Materials Kindling kindling (2 gold at provisioners), Bedroll bedroll (5 gold at provisioners)
Main uses Campfires, safe logout in the wild
Stats it trains Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence

Getting kindling

Buy kindling from a provisioner, or make your own: use a dagger or other bladed item on a tree. You put some kindling into your backpack. An axe would probably get you more wood.

Lighting a campfire

Campfire Double-click kindling within 2 tiles. If it's in your pack, the fire is placed on a free spot right next to you; if it's on the ground, it lights where it lies.

  • Your chance of lighting it is your Camping out of 100. You fail to ignite the campfire.
  • You can't light a campfire in a dungeon, or where there's no room: There is not a spot nearby to place your campfire.
  • The fire burns for a minute, dies down for half a minute more, and is gone after 100 seconds.

Securing a camp

Anyone standing within 7 tiles of a burning campfire starts making camp: You feel it would take a few moments to secure your camp. After 30 seconds near the fire: The camp is now secure.

Once your camp is secure, double-click a bedroll on the ground to unroll it and a menu offers to log you out. Choose to log out and your character leaves the world at once, with no waiting period. The offer lapses after 10 seconds, or if you walk away from the fire.

Training Camping

  • Every attempt to light a fire is a chance to gain, from 0 to 100. Kindling is cheap, so buy a stack and keep lighting.
  • Below 10.0 you gain on every attempt, sometimes several tenths at once. Above that, each attempt has a chance to gain 0.1.
  • The harder the attempt is for your skill level, the better your chance to gain. Your chance also drops as you get closer to your Camping cap and to your total skill cap of 700.
  • If you've set Camping to go down (the arrow in your skills list), gains elsewhere can lower it to make room under your total cap. Lock skills you want to keep.
  • Reaching 100.0 adds Camping to the Skills Mastered count on your achievements.
  • Provisioners, furtraders, rangers, ranger guildmasters, wandering healers and thieves will train you for gold: up to a third of their own skill, at most 42.0, for 1 gold per 0.1 points. Ask them (or use their context menu) to train the skill, then drop the gold on them.

Stats: each successful use has about a 6% chance to raise Strength, about a 5% chance to raise Dexterity and about a 5% chance to raise Intelligence by 1 point. Each stat can rise at most once every 10 minutes, and only if it's set to rise.

Suggested path

Camping How to train
0 to about 33 Buy it from a provisioner or ranger.
33 to 100 Light kindling over and over, outdoors and outside dungeons.

Tips

  • New campers start with a bedroll and 5 kindling.
  • Camp in a quiet spot. You need half a minute near the fire before the camp is secure.
  • Share the fire. Everyone near it can secure their own camp.
