The Horse is the classic mount. It's peaceful, needs only 29.1 Animal Taming, always obeys its owner, and taming them has its own New Bradford achievement.

Overview

  • In-game name: a horse
  • Corpse: a horse corpse
  • Looks: every horse spawns with one of four random looks (body 0xC8, 0xE2, 0xE4 or 0xCC). Each look turns into its own matching mount when ridden.
  • Behavior: it leaves you alone unless you attack it, then fights in melee (animal AI).

Stats

Stat Value

Skills

Skill Range
Tactics 29.3–44.0
Wrestling 29.3–44.0
Magic Resistance 25.1–30.0

Taming

Requirement Value
Minimum Animal Taming 29.1 (below this you have no chance)
Control slots 1
Maximum owners 5 (each previous owner makes it harder to tame)
Bonding Yes
Rideable Yes
Favorite food Fruits and vegetables or grain and hay
  • Success chance. For a first-time tame, your chance of success at the end of an attempt rises by about 2% per skill point and reaches 100% at 79.0 skill. Every previous owner adds 6 points to the difficulty.
  • Don't hurt it. If it takes any damage during your attempt, taming fails with "The animal is too angry to continue taming."
  • Stay close. You must stay within 6 tiles of it and keep a clear path to it.
  • Obedience. Once tamed, its taming requirement is 29.1 or lower, so it always obeys its owner.
  • Re-taming. If you've owned this one before, taming it again always succeeds ("That wasn't even challenging.").
  • After its first tame, its skills drop to 90% of their wild values, or 86% if it was paralyzed while you tamed it. Its stats don't drop.

Bonding

Only the owner can bond with a horse. Its taming requirement is 29.1 or lower, so there's no Animal Taming requirement to bond. Feed it to start bonding, then feed it again after 7 days to finish. When you see "Your pet has bonded with you!", it's done.

Riding

Double-click your tamed horse to ride it. It can run 3,840 steps before it gets too tired to move. Only running counts (walking doesn't tire it unless you're overloaded), and it recovers 1 step per second while it isn't running.

New Bradford achievement

Every horse you tame counts toward the Tame 500 Horses goal in your Achievements. Only your first tame of each horse counts. Re-taming one you've owned before doesn't.

Loot

It carries no loot.

Carving

Use a blade on the corpse to get:

  • 3 raw ribs
  • 10 hides

Tips

  • Taming starts at 29.1 and always succeeds from 79.0.
  • It always obeys its owner.
  • Taming 500 of them earns the Tame 500 Horses achievement. Only regular horses count, not pack horses or war horses.
  • Carve the corpse for 3 raw ribs and 10 hides.
