Barracoon the Piper is the champion of the Vermin Horde. He's a man in a jester's hat and fancy clothes who turns his enemies into ratmen and calls more ratmen to his side.
Overview
- In-game name: Barracoon the piper
- Corpse: the remains of Barracoon
- Looks: a human man with short hair in a green fancy shirt, yellow long pants, a pink jester hat and pink cloak, and sandals (the colors vary in shade).
- Behavior: it attacks the nearest target it sees and fights in melee.
- Movement: it is one of the faster creatures in the game (very fast speed).
- Notoriety: it always shows as a murderer (red), so anyone can attack it freely.

Abilities
Poison immunity
It is immune to poison up to Deadly (Lesser, Regular, Greater, Deadly). Only stronger poison affects it.
Bard note
His script lets him be provoked and calmed (Peacemaking) under New Bradford's rules, but he's immune to Discordance.
Special behaviors
- Ratman curse. Every time he hits someone in melee or is hit in melee, there's a 60% chance he polymorphs that person into a ratman for 3 minutes. It knocks you off your mount first and moves the weapon in your hands to your backpack. It doesn't work on someone who is already polymorphed, disguised with Incognito, or otherwise transformed.
- Calls the rats. On the same melee trigger there's a 20% chance he summons 3–6 ratmen around himself that attack his target: about 40% are ratmen, 40% ratman archers and 20% ratman mages. He stops calling more once 16 or more ratmen are within 10 tiles.
- Last stand. Once he's below 500 hit points, the next trigger turns him into a ratman as well.
- Dispels summons. Any summoned creature that can be dispelled is destroyed instantly when it hits him or he hits it.
Champion rewards
Barracoon is a champion: a champion appears at a champion altar when a spawn reaches its final stage, and killing it triggers the champion rewards.
- Power scrolls: 6 power scrolls are shared out at random among the players with looting rights (a player can get more than one). Each is a random non-crafting skill: +20 (5%), +15 (35%) or +10 (60%). If you're protected by another player through the Justice virtue, your protector may get a copy (60% for a Seeker, 80% for a Follower, 100% for a Knight of Justice).
- Valor: every player with looting rights gains 800 Valor points.
- Champion skull: the Greed skull goes into the backpack of a random player with looting rights, or into the corpse if nobody qualifies. The six different skulls are needed to summon the Harrower.
- Gold rain: every open tile within 12 tiles of the body gets a pile of 500–1,000 gold over the next 10 seconds, with fire and explosion effects.
- Star room gate: after the champion dies, the altar opens a gate to the star room (5143, 1774) for 2 minutes.
- No artifacts: champion artifacts don't drop from it on New Bradford.
Loot
Every Barracoon carries:
- Gold: about 1,515–3,000 in total (from its "Ultra Rich" ×3 loot)
- 18 magic weapons, armor pieces or shields (guaranteed)
It may also carry:
- A musical instrument (about 6% or less)
Carving
There's nothing to carve from its corpse.
Location
- Champion spawn: it is the champion of the Vermin Horde spawn. It appears at the fixed Vermin Horde altar at 5557, 827, and at any of the 11 Lost Lands altars that rolls Vermin Horde when it starts, once the spawn's fourth level is cleared.
Champion spawns only exist if the staff have generated them (with the staff command [GenChamps); the code doesn't say whether that's been done on New Bradford.
Tips
- Fight him at range: the ratman curse only triggers on melee hits (his or yours).
- If you're turned into a ratman you can't ride and your weapon goes to your pack; re-equip it and keep fighting until it wears off after 3 minutes.
- Kill or control the summoned ratmen quickly — archers and mages add up fast.
- Peacemaking and Provocation work on him.
- Don't bring summons: he destroys them on contact.
- Champions can move over and destroy obstacles in their way, and they see 18 tiles away, so you can't wall them off.
