Abilities

Poison attack

Each time its melee attack hits, there's a 50% chance it also poisons the target with Lethal poison.

  • Lethal poison deals 25% of your current hit points (at least 9, at most 26) every 5 seconds, for up to 10 ticks.
  • Cure it with a cure potion, the Cure or Arch Cure spell, or a healer's bandages and the Healing skill. Higher levels are harder to cure.

Poison immunity: it is immune to all poison, so poisoned weapons, the Poison spell and poison potions do nothing to it.

Special behaviors

  • Pure melee. It has no spells and no special attacks beyond its poison. Nothing extra happens when you hit it.

Champion rewards

Mephitis is a champion: a champion appears at a champion altar when a spawn reaches its final stage, and killing it triggers the champion rewards.

  • Power scrolls: 6 power scrolls are shared out at random among the players with looting rights (a player can get more than one). Each is a random non-crafting skill: +20 (5%), +15 (35%) or +10 (60%). If you're protected by another player through the Justice virtue, your protector may get a copy (60% for a Seeker, 80% for a Follower, 100% for a Knight of Justice).
  • Valor: every player with looting rights gains 800 Valor points.
  • Champion skull: the Venom skull goes into the backpack of a random player with looting rights, or into the corpse if nobody qualifies. The six different skulls are needed to summon the Harrower.
  • Gold rain: every open tile within 12 tiles of the body gets a pile of 500–1,000 gold over the next 10 seconds, with fire and explosion effects.
  • Star room gate: after the champion dies, the altar opens a gate to the star room (5143, 1774) for 2 minutes.
  • No artifacts: champion artifacts don't drop from it on New Bradford.

Loot

Every Mephitis carries:

  • Gold: about 2,020–4,000 in total (from its "Ultra Rich" ×4 loot)
  • 24 magic weapons, armor pieces or shields (guaranteed)

It may also carry:

  • A musical instrument (about 8% or less)

Carving

There's nothing to carve from its corpse.

Location

  • Champion spawn: it is the champion of the Arachnid spawn. It appears at the fixed Arachnid altar at 5190, 1607, and at any of the 11 Lost Lands altars that rolls Arachnid when it starts, once the spawn's fourth level is cleared.

Tips

  • Every bite has a 50% chance of Lethal poison; keep a supply of greater cure potions or a dedicated healer.
  • It's immune to all poison.
  • Unlike most champions, it isn't immune to bard skills, so Provocation, Peacemaking and Discordance can all be tried on it.
  • It has 3,000 hit points and up to 100 Wrestling; tanky pets with healing support are a good approach.
  • Champions can move over and destroy obstacles in their way, and they see 18 tiles away, so you can't wall them off.
