The Leviathan is the greatest monster of the sea: a kraken-shaped titan with 1,500 hit points, grandmaster magic and a rapid-fire breath attack. It only appears when someone casts a fabled fishing net, and the person who raised it may be rewarded with an artifact.
Overview
- In-game name: a leviathan
- Corpse: a leviathan corpse
- Behavior: it attacks the nearest target it sees and fights like a spellcaster (mage AI), mixing spells with melee.
- Movement: it is one of the faster creatures in the game (very fast speed).
- Water only: it swims and can't leave the water.

Abilities
Magic
It fights with the mage AI: it closes to melee range but casts between swings. Its Magery is 97.6–107.5 and its Evaluating Intelligence 97.6–107.5.
- Damage spells: Magic Arrow, Harm, Fireball, Lightning, Mind Blast, Energy Bolt, Explosion and Flame Strike.
- Other spells: about 1 cast in 8 is Poison (only if you aren't poisoned already). It may also Bless itself, curse you (Weaken, Clumsy, Feeblemind or Curse), drain your mana (Mana Drain or Mana Vampire) or Paralyze you.
- Healing: it cures itself when poisoned, and sometimes heals itself (Greater Heal when badly hurt), more often the higher its Magery.
- Dispel: with 501+ Intelligence it can cast Dispel on your summoned creatures (more reliably the higher its Magery).
Leviathan breath
It has its own breath attack (a modified fire breath).
- Damage: 5% of its current hit points: about 75 at full health, less as it gets hurt. (70% physical, 30% cold; the type doesn't matter under New Bradford's combat rules.)
- Cooldown: only 5–7.5 seconds between breaths, far shorter than a dragon's 30–45 seconds, so expect it often.
- The target has to be within its sight range and in line of sight.
The artifact reward
There are 22 possible artifacts: Candelabra of Souls, Ghost Ship Anchor, Gold Bricks, Phillip's Wooden Steed, Seahorse Statuette, Ship Model of the HMS Cape, Admiral's Hearty Rum, Alchemist's Bauble, Arctic Death Dealer, Blaze of Death, Burglar's Bandana, Captain Quacklebush's Cutlass, Cavorting Club, Dread Pirate Hat, Enchanted Titan Leg Bone, Gwenno's Harp, Iolo's Lute, Luna Lance, Night's Kiss, Nox Ranger's Heavy Crossbow, Polar Bear Mask and Violet Courage.
- The fisher: when it dies, the person who cast the fabled net has a 25% chance to get a random artifact from that list, put in their backpack (or at their feet if the pack is full).
- The killers: the other players who earn looting rights don't get an artifact.
- A catch for the fisher: if the fisher personally earns looting rights on the kill, they lose their chance at the 25% roll as "the fisher". The fisher only gets a shot at an artifact if other people do the killing.
Loot
Every leviathan carries:
- Gold: about 2,010–3,250 in total (from its "Filthy Rich" ×5 loot)
- a message in a bottle
- 2 ropes
It may also carry:
- A magic weapon, armor piece or shield (up to 20 chances, from about 33% down to 5% each)
- A musical instrument (about 10% or less)
- A level 5 treasure map (1% chance)
Carving
There's nothing to carve from its corpse.
Location
- Fabled fishing nets: casting a fabled fishing net in deep water always raises one leviathan, along with 5–7 other sea monsters (6–9 with a rare coloured net). Fabled nets come from the treasure chests of ancient SOS messages. See Sea Serpent for how nets work.
Tips
- Plan the fight as a group: the fisher should let others do the damage if they want the 25% artifact chance.
- Its breath comes every 5–7.5 seconds and scales with its current hit points, so the start of the fight is the most dangerous.
- It carries five Filthy Rich loot packs, a message in a bottle and a level 5 treasure map.
- It can't leave the water, but it casts spells, so being on shore doesn't make you safe.
