Item Identification reveals what a magic weapon or piece of armor really is. Magic weapons, armor and wands found on monsters or in treasure chests are unidentified; a successful check reveals their full name and magical properties.

How to use it
Use the skill: What do you wish to appraise and identify? Then target a weapon, a piece of armor or a wand within 8 tiles; items on a player vendor work too. If your check succeeds (from 0 to 100), the item becomes identified and its name shows its magical properties, such as its accuracy, damage and durability bonuses, or a wand's spell and charges. Once identified, an item stays identified for everyone.
If the check fails, or the item isn't a weapon or armor, you hear You are not certain... You can try again as often as you like. Targeting a person or creature simply shows its name.
Training Item Identification
- Every attempt on an identifiable item is a chance to gain. Carry a few unidentified pieces of loot and keep trying.
- Below 10.0 you gain on every attempt, sometimes several tenths at once. Above that, each attempt has a chance to gain 0.1.
- The harder the attempt is for your skill level, the better your chance to gain. Your chance also drops as you get closer to your Item Identification cap and to your total skill cap of 700.
- If you've set Item Identification to go down (the arrow in your skills list), gains elsewhere can lower it to make room under your total cap. Lock skills you want to keep.
- Reaching 100.0 adds Item Identification to the Skills Mastered count on your achievements.
- Jewelers, merchants, merchant guildmasters, miner guildmasters and vagabonds will train you for gold: up to a third of their own skill, at most 42.0, for 1 gold per 0.1 points. Ask them (or use their context menu) to train the skill, then drop the gold on them.
Stats: each successful use has about a 3% chance to raise Intelligence by 1 point. Each stat can rise at most once every 10 minutes, and only if it's set to rise.
Suggested path
| Item Identification | How to train |
|---|---|
| 0 to about 33 | Buy it from a merchant or jeweler. |
| 33 to 100 | Identify the magic weapons and armor you loot from monsters and treasure chests. |
Tips
- Identify before you sell. A magic item's true name tells you what it's worth.
