Hiding lets you vanish from sight where you stand. Hidden, you can watch, wait out danger, or set up for Stealth, Snooping and Stealing.

How to hide

Use the skill. Your chance is your Hiding out of 100.

  • Success: You have hidden yourself well. You turn invisible to others and your character leaves war mode.
  • Failure: You fail to hide.
  • After either, you must wait 10 seconds to use another skill.
  • While casting a spell you can't hide: You are busy doing something else and cannot hide.

Hiding near enemies

You can't hide while an enemy that's fighting you can see you and is close: You can't seem to hide right now. "Close" shrinks as you get better:

Your Hiding Enemies must be farther than
0 18 tiles
80 18 tiles
85 15 tiles
90 13 tiles
95 10 tiles
100 8 tiles

Hiding at home

  • Inside a house where you're a friend, co-owner or owner, hiding always succeeds.
  • Standing right next to the outside wall of a house gives you a +50 bonus: your chance is (Hiding + 50) out of 100.

Staying hidden

  • Walking reveals you unless you're moving with Stealth.
  • Attacking, stealing, using Spirit Speak and many other actions reveal you.
  • Someone using Detecting Hidden can find you. Their skill (plus or minus 10) is matched against your Hiding (plus or minus 10), so high Hiding is your best defence.
  • If you hide while under an Invisibility spell, the spell's timer stops: you stay hidden until you reveal yourself.

Training Hiding

  • Every attempt is a chance to gain, from 0 to 100. Just hide, step to reveal yourself, and hide again.
  • Practising inside a house you're friends with always succeeds, so it's a poor place to train: go somewhere quiet outdoors instead.
  • Below 10.0 you gain on every attempt, sometimes several tenths at once. Above that, each attempt has a chance to gain 0.1.
  • The harder the attempt is for your skill level, the better your chance to gain. Your chance also drops as you get closer to your Hiding cap and to your total skill cap of 700.
  • If you've set Hiding to go down (the arrow in your skills list), gains elsewhere can lower it to make room under your total cap. Lock skills you want to keep.
  • Reaching 100.0 adds Hiding to the Skills Mastered count on your achievements.
  • Rangers, ranger guildmasters, thieves and thief guildmasters will train you for gold: up to a third of their own skill, at most 42.0, for 1 gold per 0.1 points. Ask them (or use their context menu) to train the skill, then drop the gold on them.

Stats: each successful use has about a 2% chance to raise Dexterity and a smaller chance (under 1%) to raise Intelligence by 1 point. Each stat can rise at most once every 10 minutes, and only if it's set to rise.

Suggested path

Hiding How to train
0 to about 30 Buy it from a ranger or thief.
30 to 100 Hide, reveal yourself, hide again. Every 10 seconds is another chance.

Tips

  • Hiding is the gateway to Stealth. You need 80 Hiding before Stealth works.
  • Get out of the fight first. Run until no attacker is close, then hide.
  • New characters who pick Hiding start with a dark cloak.
