Remove Trap disarms traps set on chests and boxes. Failing is safe: a clumsy attempt never sets the trap off.

At a glance

Skill cap 100 (Grandmaster)
Requires 50 Lockpicking and 50 Detecting Hidden
Use Use the skill, then target a trapped container within 2 tiles
Stats it trains None

How to disarm a trap

  1. Use the skill: Which trap will you attempt to disarm?
  2. Target a trapped container within 2 tiles or in your pack.
  3. On success: You successfully render the trap harmless. The trap is gone for good.
  4. On failure: You fail to disarm the trap...but you don't set it off.

You must wait 10 seconds between attempts.

Message What it means
You do not know enough about locks. Become better at picking locks. You need 50 Lockpicking.
You are not perceptive enough. Become better at detect hidden. You need 50 Detecting Hidden.
That doesn't appear to be trapped. There's no trap on that container.

Not sure if a chest is trapped? Search it with Detecting Hidden first.

Trap difficulty

Each trap has a power. Your chance rises from 0% when your skill equals the power to 100% at power + 30:

Trap Difficulty range Chance at 100
Tinker trap, crafter's Tinkering 30 ['27–57', '100%']
Tinker trap, crafter's Tinkering 50 ['45–75', '100%']
Tinker trap, crafter's Tinkering 70 ['63–93', '100%']
Tinker trap, crafter's Tinkering 90 ['81–111', '63%']
Tinker trap, crafter's Tinkering 100 ['90–120', '33%']
Treasure map chest, level 1 ['25–55', '100%']
Treasure map chest, level 2 ['50–80', '100%']
Treasure map chest, level 3 ['75–105', '83%']
Treasure map chest, level 4 ['100–130', '0%']
Treasure map chest, level 5 ['125–155', '0%']

The strongest treasure chest traps are beyond any trap remover, so be ready to take the hit when you open them.

Training Remove Trap

  • Every attempt on a trap within your difficulty range is a chance to gain, from 0 to 100.
  • A tinker can set traps on their own chests (the trap's power is about 0.9 × their Tinkering), so a tinker friend can make traps to suit your level.
  • Below 10.0 you gain on every attempt, sometimes several tenths at once. Above that, each attempt has a chance to gain 0.1.
  • The harder the attempt is for your skill level, the better your chance to gain. Your chance also drops as you get closer to your Remove Trap cap and to your total skill cap of 700.
  • If you've set Remove Trap to go down (the arrow in your skills list), gains elsewhere can lower it to make room under your total cap. Lock skills you want to keep.
  • Reaching 100.0 adds Remove Trap to the Skills Mastered count on your achievements.
  • Golem crafters, thief guildmasters, tinkers and tinker guildmasters will train you for gold: up to a third of their own skill, at most 42.0, for 1 gold per 0.1 points. Ask them (or use their context menu) to train the skill, then drop the gold on them.

Stats: this skill doesn't raise any stats.

Suggested path

Remove Trap How to train
Before you start Raise Lockpicking and Detecting Hidden to 50.
0 to about 30 Buy it from a tinker or thief guildmaster.
30 to 100 Disarm traps from a tinker friend, starting low and asking for stronger traps as you improve. Level 1 and 2 treasure chests are good practice too.

Tips

  • Failing never sets the trap off, so keep trying.
  • Trapped items can't be traded until they're disarmed.
