Snooping lets you peek into other people's backpacks to see what they carry. It's how a thief picks a target before Stealing.

How to snoop
- Stand next to your target. Otherwise: That is too far away.
- Double-click their backpack (or a container inside it).
- Your chance to peek inside is your Snooping out of 100. On failure: You failed to peek into the container.
Getting noticed
Before every peek there's a chance you're noticed: 100 minus your Snooping percent. Everyone within 8 tiles then sees You notice (you) attempting to peek into (them)'s belongings. and you lose 4 karma. At 100 you're never noticed.
Staying hidden
If you snoop while hidden and the peek fails, you're usually revealed. Your chance to stay hidden is half your Hiding out of 100.
A snooped container that's trapped goes off in your face.
Who you can snoop
- Players only if you could attack them without restriction. Otherwise: You cannot perform negative acts on your target.
- NPCs outside guarded towns: anyone.
- NPCs inside guarded towns: only non-humans and those who are always fair game, such as criminals and murderers.
Training Snooping
- Every peek is a chance to gain, from 0 to 100.
- Practice on NPCs away from guarded towns, or ask a friend to stand still for you.
- Below 10.0 you gain on every attempt, sometimes several tenths at once. Above that, each attempt has a chance to gain 0.1.
- The harder the attempt is for your skill level, the better your chance to gain. Your chance also drops as you get closer to your Snooping cap and to your total skill cap of 700.
- If you've set Snooping to go down (the arrow in your skills list), gains elsewhere can lower it to make room under your total cap. Lock skills you want to keep.
- Reaching 100.0 adds Snooping to the Skills Mastered count on your achievements.
- Gypsies and thief guildmasters will train you for gold: up to a third of their own skill, at most 42.0, for 1 gold per 0.1 points. Ask them (or use their context menu) to train the skill, then drop the gold on them.
Stats: each successful use has about a 8% chance to raise Dexterity by 1 point. Each stat can rise at most once every 10 minutes, and only if it's set to rise.
Suggested path
| Snooping | How to train |
|---|---|
| 0 to about 30 | Buy it from a gypsy or thief guildmaster. |
| 30 to 100 | Snoop the packs of NPCs outside towns or of a willing friend. |
Tips
- Snoop before you steal so you know what's worth taking.
- Watch your karma at low skill; being noticed costs a little every time.
