The Gazer is a floating eye that casts spells. It's a common mid-level dungeon creature that carries nightshade and potions.

  • In-game name: a gazer
  • Corpse: a gazer corpse

Tactics 50.1–70.0
Wrestling 50.1–70.0
Evaluating Intelligence 50.1–65.0
Magery 50.1–65.0

Abilities

Magic

It fights with the mage AI: it closes to melee range but casts between swings. Its Magery is 50.1–65.0 and its Evaluating Intelligence 50.1–65.0.

  • Damage spells: Magic Arrow, Harm, Fireball and Lightning. A stronger one (with more Magery) can also cast Mind Blast.
  • Other spells: about 1 cast in 8 is Poison (only if you aren't poisoned already). It may also Bless itself, curse you (Weaken, Clumsy, Feeblemind or Curse), drain your mana (Mana Drain) or Paralyze you.
  • Healing: it cures itself when poisoned, and sometimes heals itself (Greater Heal when badly hurt), more often the higher its Magery.
  • Dispel: with 141+ Intelligence it can cast Dispel on your summoned creatures (more reliably the higher its Magery).

Loot

Every gazer carries:

  • Gold: about 60–150 in total (from its "Average" loot)
  • 1 random potion: Agility, Strength, Refresh, Lesser Cure, Lesser Heal or Lesser Poison
  • 4 nightshade

It may also carry:

  • A magic weapon, armor piece or shield (up to 3 chances, from about 5% down to 0.5% each)
  • A musical instrument (about 0.4% or less)
  • A level 1 treasure map (1% chance)

Carving

Use a blade on the corpse to get:

  • 1 raw ribs

Location

  • The Deceit brazier: double-clicking it from within 2 tiles summons one creature picked at random from a list of about 90, and this is one of them. The brazier warns players who step next to it ("Heed this warning well, and use this brazier at your own peril"). It works once every 15 minutes and places the creature within 5 tiles. The summoned creature is set to attack the closest target, even if it would normally leave you alone, and it stays within 5 tiles of the brazier.

Tips

  • A good early magic-using target to practice against.
  • It's a source of nightshade.
