The Forest Ostard is a peaceful riding lizard that comes in many colors. It's as easy to tame as a horse and always obeys its owner.
Overview
- In-game name: a forest ostard
- Corpse: an ostard corpse
- Looks: every forest ostard spawns in a random color from the slime color range.
- Behavior: it leaves you alone unless you attack it, then fights in melee (animal AI).
- Corpse note: its corpse is named an ostard corpse.

- Success chance. For a first-time tame, your chance of success at the end of an attempt rises by about 2% per skill point and reaches 100% at 79.0 skill. Every previous owner adds 6 points to the difficulty.
- Don't hurt it. If it takes any damage during your attempt, taming fails with "The animal is too angry to continue taming."
- Stay close. You must stay within 6 tiles of it and keep a clear path to it.
- Obedience. Once tamed, its taming requirement is 29.1 or lower, so it always obeys its owner.
- Re-taming. If you've owned this one before, taming it again always succeeds ("That wasn't even challenging.").
- After its first tame, its skills drop to 90% of their wild values, or 86% if it was paralyzed while you tamed it. Its stats don't drop.
Pack instinct
Forest ostards hunt better in groups. When several of your pets from the same pack group (the ostard group: desert, forest and frenzied ostards) attack the same creature while standing next to it (within 1 tile), each gets extra melee damage:
- 2 pets: +25%
- 3 pets: +50%
- 4 pets: +75%
- 5 or more: +100%
All the pets must have the same owner. The bonus only applies against other creatures, not against players.
Bonding
Only the owner can bond with a forest ostard. Its taming requirement is 29.1 or lower, so there's no Animal Taming requirement to bond. Feed it to start bonding, then feed it again after 7 days to finish. When you see "Your pet has bonded with you!", it's done.
Riding
Double-click your tamed forest ostard to ride it. It can run 3,840 steps before it gets too tired to move, the same as a horse. Only running counts (walking doesn't tire it unless you're overloaded), and it recovers 1 step per second while it isn't running.
Loot
It carries no loot.
Carving
Use a blade on the corpse to get:
- 3 raw ribs
Tips
- Taming starts at 29.1 and always succeeds from 79.0.
- It hits a bit harder than a desert ostard (8–14 vs 5–11).
- Ostards share a pack group for the pack instinct bonus.
- Its corpse gives 3 raw ribs and no hides.
