The Evil Mage is a renegade spellcaster with 75–100 Magery but only 49–63 hit points. It's dangerous at range and fragile up close, and it carries spell scrolls and reagents.
Overview
- In-game name: a random name (Ronlyn, Merkul, Zasfus and about 150 others) with the title the evil mage
- Corpse: an evil mage corpse
- Looks: a robed, hooded mage figure (the classic evil mage body). Under the older rules it would look like an ordinary man in a robe and sandals.
- Behavior: it attacks the nearest target it sees and fights like a spellcaster (mage AI), mixing spells with melee.
- Notoriety: it always shows as a murderer (red), so anyone can attack it freely.
- Rummages corpses: from time to time it takes a random item from a corpse within 2 tiles (*rummages through a corpse and takes an item*). Loot your kills quickly near one.

Abilities
Magic
It fights with the mage AI: it closes to melee range but casts between swings. Its Magery is 75.1–100.0 and its Evaluating Intelligence 75.1–100.0.
- Damage spells: Magic Arrow, Harm, Fireball, Lightning, Mind Blast, Energy Bolt and Explosion. A stronger one (with more Magery) can also cast Flame Strike.
- Other spells: about 1 cast in 8 is Poison (only if you aren't poisoned already). It may also Bless itself, curse you (Weaken, Clumsy, Feeblemind or Curse), drain your mana (Mana Drain or Mana Vampire) or Paralyze you.
- Healing: it cures itself when poisoned, and sometimes heals itself (Greater Heal when badly hurt), more often the higher its Magery.
- Dispel: with 96+ Intelligence it can cast Dispel on your summoned creatures (more reliably the higher its Magery).
Special behaviors
- Body change on old saves. Its script converts any evil mage saved with a plain human body into the robed mage body (and strips its hair and skin colour) when the world loads. It picks one of the two evil mage lord bodies for this, so an old evil mage may look like a lord.
Loot
Every evil mage carries:
- Gold: about 60–150 in total (from its "Average" loot)
- 1 magic scroll from circles 4–7. With Necromancy enabled on New Bradford, necromancy scrolls can show up too.
- 6 reagents (random)
- its robe and sandals
It may also carry:
- A magic weapon, armor piece or shield (up to 3 chances, from about 5% down to 0.5% each)
- A musical instrument (about 0.4% or less)
Carving
Use a blade on the corpse to get:
- 1 raw ribs
Location
- The Deceit brazier (a scripted item named for the dungeon Deceit): double-clicking it from within 2 tiles summons one creature picked at random from a list of about 90, and this is one of them. The brazier warns players who step next to it ("Heed this warning well, and use this brazier at your own peril"). It works once every 15 minutes and places the creature within 5 tiles. The summoned creature is set to attack the closest target, even if it would normally leave you alone, and it stays within 5 tiles of the brazier.
Tips
- Close the distance quickly: it has fewer hit points than most mages its level.
- It rummages through corpses, so loot your kills before it reaches them.
- Carve it for 1 raw ribs.
