The Betrayer is a towering clockwork war machine from Blackthorn's forges. It casts spells as well as any mage, stuns with crushing blows and fills the air around it with poison gas.

Overview

  • In-game name: a betrayer
  • Corpse: a betrayer corpse
  • Behavior: it attacks the nearest target it sees and fights like a spellcaster (mage AI), mixing spells with melee.
  • Bard skills: it can't be provoked, calmed with Peacemaking or discorded.
  • Notoriety: it always shows as a murderer (red), so anyone can attack it freely.

Abilities

Magic

It fights with the mage AI: it closes to melee range but casts between swings. Its Magery is 50.1–100.0 and its Evaluating Intelligence 90.1–100.0.

  • Damage spells: Magic Arrow, Harm, Fireball and Lightning. A stronger one (with more Magery) can also cast Mind Blast, Energy Bolt, Explosion and Flame Strike.
  • Other spells: about 1 cast in 8 is Poison (only if you aren't poisoned already). It may also Bless itself, curse you (Weaken, Clumsy, Feeblemind or Curse), drain your mana (Mana Drain or Mana Vampire) or Paralyze you.
  • Healing: it cures itself when poisoned, and sometimes heals itself (Greater Heal when badly hurt), more often the higher its Magery.
  • Dispel: with 151+ Intelligence it can cast Dispel on your summoned creatures (more reliably the higher its Magery).

Poison immunity

It is immune to all poison, so poisoned weapons, the Poison spell and poison potions do nothing to it.

Colossal blow

Each melee hit has a 30% chance to be a colossal blow: an extra weapon hit, and the target is frozen for 5 seconds ("You have been stunned by a colossal blow!").

Poison gas cloud

In combat (50% chance when it acts, then a 5–30 second wait), if its target is within 3 tiles and in sight, it releases a cloud that gives Deadly poison to everyone within 3 tiles: players, pets, summons and creatures on other teams.

Shared ability slot

Its colossal blow and its poison gas cloud are a single "pick one" ability group: whenever one or both can fire, the game picks one of the ones that can (equal weights).

Loot

Every betrayer carries:

  • Gold: about 662–1,000 in total (from its "Filthy Rich" and "Rich" loot)
  • 1 random gem (amber, amethyst, citrine, diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire, star sapphire or tourmaline)
  • 1 power crystal

It may also carry:

  • A magic weapon, armor piece or shield (up to 7 chances, from about 33% down to 1% each)
  • A musical instrument (about 3% or less)
  • A music box gear for Dawn's music box (5% chance; 3 in 4 of those are a common tune, the rest uncommon)
  • a Blackthorn welcome book (2% chance)
  • A level 5 treasure map (1% chance)

The power crystals, arcane gems, clockwork assemblies and gears that Exodus constructs and golems carry are the parts a tinker needs to build a golem.

Carving

Use a blade on the corpse to get:

  • 1 raw ribs

Tips

  • Bring Greater Cure potions or a healer: its gas cloud gives Deadly poison to everyone within 3 tiles.
  • Its Magery rolls anywhere from 50 to 100, so some betrayers cast much harder spells than others.
  • It's immune to poison and can't be discorded, but provocation and Peacemaking still work.
  • Every betrayer drops a power crystal, the hardest-to-get golem part.
