Skills/Stealth
Appearance
Stealth lets you move while hidden. Each successful use gives you a number of quiet steps before you have to try again, so a skilled sneak can cross a room, a camp or a dungeon unseen.
At a glance
| Skill cap | 100 (Grandmaster) |
|---|---|
| Requires | 80 Hiding and an armor rating below 26 |
| Steps per use | Your Stealth divided by 10 (10 at Grandmaster), at least 1 |
| Stats it trains | None |
How to use Stealth
- Hide first. Otherwise: You must hide first
- Use Stealth. If you succeed: You begin to move quietly.
- You may now take a number of steps equal to your Stealth divided by 10 (at least 1).
- When you run out of steps while walking, Stealth is automatically used again. If that check fails you're revealed: You fail in your attempt to move unnoticed.
You must wait 10 seconds between uses.
Requirements
- Hiding 80 or higher. Otherwise: You are not hidden well enough. Become better at hiding.
- Light armor. Your armor rating (shown in your status) must be below 26: You could not hope to move quietly wearing this much armor.
- On foot. Moving while mounted reveals you.
- At least 25 Stealth. Below that, any step reveals you even after a successful use.
Running
Running uses 2 steps for each tile, and running out of steps while running reveals you straight away instead of trying again. Walk when you can.
Your chance
Each point of armor rating makes Stealth 2 points harder. Your chance is (Stealth + 20 − 2 × armor rating) out of 100:
| Stealth | AR 0 | AR 5 | AR 10 | AR 15 | AR 20 | AR 25 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | ['50%', '40%', '30%', '20%', '10%', '0%'] | |||||
| 50 | ['70%', '60%', '50%', '40%', '30%', '20%'] | |||||
| 70 | ['90%', '80%', '70%', '60%', '50%', '40%'] | |||||
| 90 | ['100%', '100%', '90%', '80%', '70%', '60%'] | |||||
| 100 | ['100%', '100%', '100%', '90%', '80%', '70%'] |
Training Stealth
- Every use is a chance to gain, from 0 to 100. Hide, use Stealth, walk a few steps, and repeat.
- Wearing a little armor makes each use harder and so improves your gain chance, at the cost of more failures.
- Below 10.0 you gain on every attempt, sometimes several tenths at once. Above that, each attempt has a chance to gain 0.1.
- The harder the attempt is for your skill level, the better your chance to gain. Your chance also drops as you get closer to your Stealth cap and to your total skill cap of 700.
- If you've set Stealth to go down (the arrow in your skills list), gains elsewhere can lower it to make room under your total cap. Lock skills you want to keep.
- Reaching 100.0 adds Stealth to the Skills Mastered count on your achievements.
- Ranger guildmasters and thief guildmasters will train you for gold: up to a third of their own skill, at most 42.0, for 1 gold per 0.1 points. Ask them (or use their context menu) to train the skill, then drop the gold on them.
Stats: this skill doesn't raise any stats.
Suggested path
| Stealth | How to train |
|---|---|
| Before you start | Raise Hiding to 80. |
| 0 to about 30 | Buy it from a ranger or thief guildmaster. |
| 30 to 100 | Hide, use Stealth, walk until revealed, repeat. Add light armor later to keep it challenging. |
Tips
- Count your steps. At 50 Stealth you only get 5 steps per use.
- Never run near enemies while sneaking.
- Leather and cloth keep your armor rating low.
