Detecting Hidden lets you search an area for anyone hiding there, and spot traps on chests and the ground. It's the main defence against thieves and sneaks.

At a glance

Skill cap 100 (Grandmaster)
Use Use the skill, then target a spot up to 12 tiles away
Search radius Your skill divided by 10 (10 tiles at Grandmaster)
Starting gear Dark cloak a dark cloak
Stats it trains Intelligence and Dexterity

Searching for people

  1. Use the skill: Where will you search?
  2. Target a spot on the ground (or yourself) up to 12 tiles away.
  3. A skill check is made. Everyone hidden within the search radius of that spot is then matched against you.
  4. Anyone you find is pulled out of hiding: You have been revealed! If you find nothing: You can see nothing hidden there.

Search radius

Your skill Radius on success Radius on failure
20 ['2 tiles', '1 tiles']
40 ['4 tiles', '2 tiles']
60 ['6 tiles', '3 tiles']
80 ['8 tiles', '4 tiles']
100 ['10 tiles', '5 tiles']

Finding them

For each hidden person in range, your skill plus or minus 10 is compared with their Hiding plus or minus 10:

Your Detecting Hidden minus their Hiding Chance to reveal them
-20 0%
-15 5%
-10 15%
-5 31%
Even 52%
+5 73%
+10 88%
+15 97%
+20 100%

In your own house

In a house where you're a friend, co-owner or owner, your search radius becomes 22 tiles, and anyone hiding inside the house is found every time.

Finding traps

  • Trapped containers: target a chest or box within your search radius. On a successful check the word [trapped] appears over it.
  • Hidden traps on the ground within your search radius become visible for 10 seconds when you search.

After a search you must wait 10 seconds to use another skill.

Training Detecting Hidden

  • Every search is a chance to gain, from 0 to 100, whether or not anyone is there.
  • Searching trapped containers also trains it.
  • Below 10.0 you gain on every attempt, sometimes several tenths at once. Above that, each attempt has a chance to gain 0.1.
  • The harder the attempt is for your skill level, the better your chance to gain. Your chance also drops as you get closer to your Detecting Hidden cap and to your total skill cap of 700.
  • If you've set Detecting Hidden to go down (the arrow in your skills list), gains elsewhere can lower it to make room under your total cap. Lock skills you want to keep.
  • Reaching 100.0 adds Detecting Hidden to the Skills Mastered count on your achievements.
  • Rangers, thieves and thief guildmasters will train you for gold: up to a third of their own skill, at most 42.0, for 1 gold per 0.1 points. Ask them (or use their context menu) to train the skill, then drop the gold on them.

Stats: each successful use has about a 1% chance to raise Dexterity and about a 2% chance to raise Intelligence by 1 point. Each stat can rise at most once every 10 minutes, and only if it's set to rise.

Suggested path

Detecting Hidden How to train
0 to about 30 Buy it from a ranger or thief.
30 to 100 Search over and over, ideally with a friend practising Hiding nearby.

Tips

  • Search where you stand (target yourself) when you suspect a thief nearby.
  • Pair it with Remove Trap. Remove Trap needs 50 Detecting Hidden.
  • New characters who pick Detecting Hidden start with a dark cloak.
