The Ki-Rin is a magical, good-aligned mount that only men can tame and ride. It hunts evil creatures and players, fights with strong spells, and can strike down an attacker with lightning to save its rider.

Overview

  • In-game name: a ki-rin
  • Corpse: a ki-rin corpse
  • Behavior: it attacks creatures and players with negative karma (evil) on sight, and fights like a spellcaster (mage AI), using both melee and spells. It is also hostile to the undead.
  • Innocent: it shows as innocent (blue) to players. What happens to your reputation if you attack one hasn't been checked.
  • Men only: only male characters can tame it or ride it.

Abilities

Magic

It uses the mage AI with up to 100 Magery and 90 Evaluating Intelligence, so expect strong, high-circle spells along with its melee attacks. Which spells it casts depends on the AI and isn't listed here.

Lightning when you're in danger

While you ride a tamed Ki-Rin, if an attacker's hit would drop you below 30 hit points and the attacker is within 18 tiles, the Ki-Rin calls down a lightning bolt on them for 35–100 damage that can't be resisted. You'll see "Your mount calls down the forces of nature on your opponent." It can do this at most once an hour.

Taming

Requirement Value
Minimum Animal Taming 95.1 (below this you have no chance)
Control slots 2
Maximum owners 5 (each previous owner makes it harder to tame)
Bonding Yes
Rideable Yes
Favorite food Fruits and vegetables or grain and hay
  • Men only. A female character trying to tame it gets "That creature can only be tamed by males."
  • Success chance. For a first-time tame, your chance of success at the end of an attempt is about 10% at 100.0 skill, and it improves as your skill rises. Every previous owner adds 6 points to the difficulty.
  • Don't hurt it. If it takes any damage during your attempt, taming fails with "The animal is too angry to continue taming."
  • Stay close. You must stay within 6 tiles of it and keep a clear path to it.
  • Obedience. Once tamed, how often it obeys depends on your Animal Taming and Animal Lore (taming counts four times as much as lore). With both at 95.1 it obeys about 70% of the time, and at about 100.0 it reaches the 99% maximum. Below 95.1 the chance drops quickly, to as low as 22%.
  • Re-taming. If you've owned this one before, taming it again always succeeds ("That wasn't even challenging.").
  • After its first tame, its skills drop to 90% of their wild values, or 86% if it was paralyzed while you tamed it. Its stats don't drop.

Bonding

Only the owner can bond with a Ki-Rin, and they need at least 95.1 Animal Taming (base skill). Feed it to start bonding, then feed it again after 7 days to finish. When you see "Your pet has bonded with you!", it's done.

Riding

Double-click your tamed Ki-Rin to ride it. Only male characters can ride it; anyone else sees "The Ki-Rin refuses your attempts to mount it." It can run 4,480 steps before it gets too tired to move, compared with 3,840 for a horse. Only running counts (walking doesn't tire it unless you're overloaded), and it recovers 1 step per second while it isn't running.

Loot

Every Ki-Rin carries:

  • Gold: about 260–350 in total (from its "Rich" loot)
  • 1 magic scroll from circles 1–3 (or now and then a blank scroll). With Necromancy enabled on New Bradford, necromancy scrolls can show up too.
  • 1 random potion: Agility, Strength, Refresh, Lesser Cure, Lesser Heal or Lesser Poison

It may also carry:

  • A magic weapon, armor, shield or jewelry (up to 3 chances, from about 20% down to 1% each)
  • A musical instrument (about 1% or less)
  • Ki-Rin brains (35% chance). What they're used for on New Bradford isn't known.

Carving

Use a blade on the corpse to get:

  • 3 raw ribs
  • 10 horned hides, doubled to 20 in Felucca

Tips

  • Only male characters can tame or ride it.
  • It attacks evil characters on sight. A tamer with negative karma will be attacked.
  • At 100.0 skill each attempt has only about a 10% chance, and it needs 2 control slots.
  • Its lightning only fires when you're about to drop below 30 hit points, and only once an hour, so don't count on it twice in one fight.
  • Carve the corpse for 10 horned hides (20 in Felucca).
